Default A totally new PT system?????

I've heard rumors about a totally brand new PT system. Of course I didn't believe it at all; we just changed from Mix to HD, it would be a "harakiri" move for Digidesign to change again to a new system not backward compatible!

It sounds like another "urban legend".....
but maybe there is something true in every legend....
Any news about this?

"PT DSD 1.0" is pretty much the rumour I am hearing too - it would be a logical next step for Digi ... In fact, the level of certainty among people not normally prone to idle speculation is such that I'm not going to upgrade my current HD4 to accel or anything else only to see a whole new system appear a month or two later.

SACD may be great as a delivery format, but DSD is a production nightmare IMO. After a decade of development PT is just starting to become a high fidelity solution. It would be foolhardy to cast aside the collective PCM design brainpower that is now at work in the TDM format for a technology that brings with it entirely new design criterea not mention a lot of inherent problems.

It would be cool though to track DSD and then convert to PCM for edit and mix.

I agree with a lot of what you say. The thing is that DSD is commonly believed to be simply better than PCM. DSD is poised to become the new high end recording standard. Digi need a new flagship product to further differentiate their products from the native guys and remain the digital system of choice for professional recording and mixing. How could they not be trying to get this ready as soon as possible?

"Prism Dream ADA-8 interface / converter
*
Following the phenomenal success of the the ADA-8 direct-connect I/O Module for Pro Tools|24 MIX, we are now shipping a direct-connect module for Pro Tools|HD, including Pro Tools|HD version 6 & 6.1.

DSD I/O module now shipping, with SDIF-2, SDIF-3 and MAC-DSD interfaces.* New DSP features include eight-channel* PCM-to-DSD and DSD-to-PCM conversion (any PCM sample-rate), plus 8-channel PCM sample-rate conversion.

NOTE: By fitting both of these I/O modules, Pro Tools can record and replay DSD audio, allowing it to produce SACD master recordings."

Well, yeah., but there's no telling how detrimental the conversion process will be.

-And you'd still be editing pcm information, not DSD. The major drawback of DSD seems to be that it's incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to do digital manipulation on it, such as plugins, in-the-box mixing, etc.

I wouldn't worry about this too much.

Except for the fact that it's been languishing for years, and very few people seem interested in purchasing it.

Absolutely, but its gathering momentum fast now. It feels like its a move being driven from the top down and for all sorts of reasons.
