Default Firewire reliability

For the past few years I have had complete satisfaction with Lacie's desktop firewire drives. It is the only drive I buy for myself and my clients (excluding the Porsche series). In the last few weeks I have heard from I couple of people that they've had physical problems with their new Lacie drives. I wanted to know if anyone has seen a recent change in their reliability. In addition, is anyone using the Lacie Big Disk Extreme?

I was working in a studio recently that just bought a mix system and a new lacie. They tried two different 80 gig lacies before getting a third that worked. It kept not showing up on the desktop. Eventually they got the big disk. It's working fine but then again It's only new and hasn't been used on any sessions with a big track count yet.

Would you be able to tell me how recently you bought those drives, and what models and sizes they were? I am trying to ascertain whether their production quality has taken a nosedive.

On a related note...

On one system at my studio, we are using LaCie d2 Extreme 120GB drives using Firewire 400 on 1G MDD G4 OS 9 PT 5.3.1 (HD1). I haven't noticed any problems as a general Mac drive. Everything appeared normal right from day one. These drives are about 6 months old.

But, we are experiencing delays going into record in ProTools. It gets worse as we add multiple record tracks, work online, or drag a 9-pin device along during the record. The fingers tap for sometimes 1-2 seconds before going into record. Any ideas? Simliar experiences? Would upgrading to OS X help?

ive got about 10 lacie's......5 are d2's.
the only ones that i have had problems with are the Porshe drives.
my newest d2-500gig's run great on my G5 2.5ghz on the fw800 port, much smoother than i expected seeing that i just switched from ultra scsi drives / atto card that ran great.

I've been using the D2 drives everyday for the last year and a bit. I have not had any problems with the four 120 gigs that I run.

It seems that most people have had success with the D2's. Anyone else using the Big Disk Extremes?

i,ve had two lacie 120's go down at about the same time. one wont mount and seemed to be messing with my cpu. the other wont power up properly 75% of the time. i also have a d2 200 and it has been great! no probems at least yet.

these problems caused me to make a switch to quantegy drives. they seem to be great well designed drives, ( a little more green though) however i read on this forum about their chapter 11 issue.
