Default Re: Legacy interfaces will be supported but no PPC or PCI

Dropping PPC support has nothing to do with PCI or PCI-express, it only means there will be no more new software for PPC platform. Current qualified PPC machines that have PCI buss will continue working with the current software, and those systems will continue being fully supported.

Starting with 8.0.3 the situation is this: the OSX release only supports Intel hardware, but I believe (this is just a hunch) that it will be supported on both Leopard and Snow Leopard; though it would be stupid not to upgrade to SL if you have Intel hardware.

Yes, it is true that there are no PCI bussed Mac Pro's out there, but it does not mean that Protools runs on PCI-express only. Sadly, some of the guys are running Windows and there are still tons of compatible PCI hardware in the bluescreen-land. PTHD is not Mac only, and PCI is still very much alive.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of switching to PC land. I would really hate to do that at this point but that may be the best option if that is reliable.

Has anyone heard if there will be any more CS updates that will fix the ADC and midi problems?

Any Digi people out there? Is there a chance of one version with the bug fixes?

It would really be a drag if there was not a solid version of pt8 for PPC. Otherwise I guess I'm stuck on pt7 or I have to switch to the less logical choice.

Haaaa haaa haaa haa ha ha!!!!

Sorry, I laugh when I'm in pain. There have been plenty of announcements about ADC and MIDI "improvements" over the years, but none have quite "fixed" them. A future announcement which claims to fix either ADC or MIDI would likely be yet another claim, but I'd be very surprised if either became stable. For some reason, these are two things which haunt Digidesign.

I wouldn't expect it to be perfect, functioning enough that I can record a band in time without latency would make me happy.

I just don't understand the decision to support 888s when there are a million studios using the PCI cards. It would seem like you would want them to pay for software upgrades and plugin updates. It seems that most of these users are going to switch to another native platform rather than invest in new cards that may have a limited lifespan or a long testing period ahead.

Why would a company like Digidesign want to lose thousands of customers at this point in time?

STILL UNCLEAR based on their EOS re v8 and beyond. But Im NOT about to swap out a well-functioning PowerPC PCI platform for a 6-8k upgrade to PCIe for privilege of maintaining "cutting-edge" qualifications with a clientele who has ZIP interest in such matters. They DO know what a crash is. And they DO expect an accommodation on the invoice...Come on DIGI. Given the state of the industry, we dont need more features. I'd be satisfied with a more stable, robust platform that takes care of basics, rather than a newer tricked-out PT. Has anyone ever recorded a multi-track live ensemble @192 with a standard array of plug-ins without issues? ... AND WHY?!?!?
