bounce question
Hi All.
I'm new to Pro Tools. I've got a 5.1 session happening and I can bounce it out as a 5.1 split or interleaved file no problem. What I'm wondering is how can I bounce a stereo version? I'm looking through the manual and I'm not having alot of luck. To simplify the issue, I opened a new 5.1 session (DTS format), created a 5.1 track and imported the 5.1 bounce I created from the original session. So now I have a simple session with one track containing a 5.1 mix. But when I 'bounce to disk' I don't get the option to bounce it down in stereo. Any help will be much appreciated. Saki |

Re: bounce question
interleaved is stereo... that is what you need.

Re: bounce question
Hi Saki,
You can't bounce to Stereo from 5.1, you have to manually do a folddown. The various formulas for doing the folddown have been discussed and debated on the Post and Surround forum for quite awhile, so you can do a search and get a lot of different opinions. Usually, though, you'd split your 5.1 track out to 6 mono tracks, then pan them accordingly to a stereo output for bouncing or to a stereo buss to do a Record To Disk (the preferred method, IMHO).Left and Right go to L&R as-is, Center panned Center and lowered 3db (or not lowered at all, depending on your opinion), Surrounds Panned and lowered 6 db (or to taste) and LFE either completely unused or lowered 9-10db depending on what's actually IN the LFE channel. If you RTD instead of bounce, you'll get a Split Stereo file, which would then need to be Exported ("Export Regions As Files" in the Region Bin menu, or there's a key command for it that escapes me at the moment) if you require a Stereo Interleaved file. Hope this helps, good luck! |

Re: bounce question
Unfortunately that is not the case.
The interleaved option I mentioned creates a 6 channel interleaved file and the size of the file ends up 3 times larger than what a stereo version would be (6 is 3 times larger than 2). In the finder (if you're using a mac), the file may look like a stereo interleaved file (because both are displayed as 1 icon) but in reality, there are 6 channels in the file and, as mentioned before, the size is 3 times larger. Am I missing something here? Saki |
