Default How To Get a Good Plate Reverb

How can I get a good (decent) plate reverb using the built in plugins that came with pro tools? I'm just saying is there anyway to get any sort of plate reverb?

There really isn't as Dverb just is not a great reverb(although it does have some uses). I mostly save Dverb for times when I need something a little trashy. The first plugin that I recommend for new Pro Toolers is a decent reverb and there are several, at several price points. I like IK 's Classik Verbs(and use their plate on at least half my mixes). Breverb is very good, as is Redline(from 112db), Lexicon(BIG $$$ but sweet) and TL Space(another good reason to buy the MPTK2). There are tons of impulse responses floating around for TL Space and if I want a more vintage or organic sound(like for bluegrass), the TL Space with an EMT plate IR is excellent. So, you have lots of choices(but it ain't gonna happen with the stock plugins).

LOL@albee1952

Man, while D-Verb is not my 'go to', it doesn't suck. LOL. If you don't have another option, it can be used and useful. In fact, any competent recordist should be able to use the stock PT amenities on a recording start to finish. And achieve reasonable results. I've used the D-Verb plate just to use it, and it's worked out ok. Hey, Brian Malouf likes it! There are at this stage, however, many inexpensive alternatives that may serve better...

Now, Nomad Factory Blueverb? SUX.

it's all a matter of taste. for me, d-verb sucks. and for me, the only plate verb plug that sounds like a REAL plate is the EMT140 that runs on the UAD system.

if you haven't used a real EMT, then a plate reverb is to you probably just a bright, dense verb. frankly, most of those, while nice in their own right, don't really nail the sound of a real plate. the UAD gets closest.

Dverb can do an adequate job.. I use the IK Classic 'verbs more often than not, but Dverb isn't as horrible as some folks make it out to be.
Put it on an AUX buss with some EQ and play around with it.
The AIR reverbs haven't impressed me at all beyond being SFX.

Heck, the TC Electronics M350 does a pretty decent job for an inexpensive external reverb. As noted, the UAD EMT140 is one of the best if not the best software plate, once you get past the latency issues.

Not to be silly but some have made their own plate reverb:

There's nothing quite like the real thing. I wonder if Hummingbird in Nashville still has that hand-built Lawson stereo plate in the basement of their building on Music Row? Last I knew, they were trying to sell it. Holy Cow. That thing was awesome. About the size of a sheet of plywood, and a foot wide, with a big lever on top to set the verb time.

Anyway, if you can run VSTs, there are some nice impulses of real plates available for free, and Reverberate will convolve them for you for free at very low latency.

+1 On IK CSR, however I think Altiverb 6 and the Lexicon bundle are the next best thing to hardware.
