Pro tools 9 to 11 upgrade 199.00?????

Hey guys there are offering this at sweetwater. Pro tools 9 works pretty well for me other than the occasional error and I guess I am limited by the amount of RAM I can use.
So my question is how happy are you guys with your protools 11? Is it worth the upgrade compared to 9. 199 is pretty enticing...

Yes, PT11 is a huge step up from PT9. If you go ahead and purchase this upgrade before December 31st 2014 you will get EXTENDED Standard Avid Support. This is going to be a 1 year contract, but if you act now you will get coverage through March 2016!

If you are serious about Pro Tools, you will want to be on Pro Tools 11 since it is 64 bit and will run on newer computers. And since RTAS is being phased out in favor of the new AAX plugin format, you will need Pro Tools 11 if you like to buy new plugins.

This upgrade will force you to surrender your Pro Tools 9 license. So...

0. Make sure all the plugins you need are available on AAX-64 for Pro Tools 11 (not RTAS, not AAX-32)

1. Make sure your system exceeds the minimum systems requirements for Pro Tools 11, especially memory. And OS version... and that that OS is also compatible with whatever interface drivers you need and they work with Pro Tools 11.

2. Go get the Pro Tools 11 demo, and install that on your system and test it works for you before you purchase the upgrade. Ideally do an clean OS install on a different boot partition and install Pro Tools 11 there so you don't risk your Pro Tools 9 install.


The Pro Tools 11 license also lets you run Pro Tools 10 (which still supports RTAS plugins), but that is effectively unmaintained software.

You WILL need an iLok v2 for the trial license.

Keep in mind if you purchase before December 31st you get the Extended Coverage through March 2016. If you purchase after Dec. 31, 2014, it will be 12 months of support/upgrades.

And he gets 10.x with 11 right? If so, not just a choice between 9 and 11.

10 vs 11 - Some find 10.x more stable than 11. I suspect this has as much to do with functionality used/required as much as anything.

9 vs 10 - My experience has been that the latest version of 10 is at least as good as any version of 9. But as Darryl suggested, download and test if you depend on your system.

In any case it seems unlikely you'll get a better offer.

So I do have a question about iLok assets - do they become yearly things and expire somehow? Will I eventually have to "Log in" as well as have an iLok? I fear for my future.

No. Even if you choose NOT to continue your support plan after it expires, you WILL still own your Pro Tools 11 license (or whatever version you have at that time)

You will not be able to upgrade it without getting back on a support plan, BUT you still own that license. For anyone on MP, LE, EX, who is serious about Pro Tools, you have nothing to lose by upgrading now.

Yes, you WILL need an iLok. All versions of Pro Tools from 9 and up require an iLok.

For Pro Tools 11 and forward, you will need an iLok v2. Many plugins require iLok anyway, so you will probably want one at some point anyway in order to use awesome plugins like Slate Virtual Mix Rack, or the Avid Pro Series Compressor and Limiter,

The first gen iLok is shaped like a 'Key' while the version 2 iLok is rectangular

If you try placing a license that requires an iLok v2 on to an iLok v1, you will get this error.

So if you are doing the upgrade and do not already have an iLok v2, be sure you purchase the v2 and not the older v1 key style.
