Default Rendering FX on a single MIDI note

I was trying to render a Reverb effect on a single MIDI snare hit, but I got an error message saying that no audio had been selected, even though I had highlighted the one MIDI note. Is this action possible (am I doing it wrong), or do I have to either paste the note to a new MIDI track or use automation on an Aux Send?

Thanks.

If there are no other midi notes playing at that moment, simply automate a send to an AUX track with the reverb plugin. If you are trying to insert the reverb plugin, that's the incorrect approach. Time-based effect plugins(like reverb and delay) are best handled with AUX tracks and sends.

Having said that, it might also be a good idea to render(print) your midi-driven instruments as the audio is a bit easier to work with(in the case of effecting a single snare hit, you could just cut/paste that hit to another track and add the reverb to that track) Plus, by committing the virtual instrument to audio, you will "future-proof" the session as you will archive it in a way that has audio(very likely to always be readable in some future DAW) as opposed to a virtual instrument that might not be available 5 or 10 years from now

Adam, Adam, Adam - you've been around here long enough to know that MIDI and audio are different. You selected something that triggers the sound but NOT the sound itself. From your description, as meager as it is, I'm guessing you're trying to apply the reverb as an audio suite plugin and that won't work.

Oh *****t, right.. no audio was selected cuz I just highlighted the marker or trigger. Ya, I was trying to use the audio suite. Then I tried it with an Aux Send and edited the volume to just cover that note. That didn't work out that well tho.. the next midi note was too close to the snare hit, so I had to cut the volume too quick for the reverb to play out. It worked out best when I made a new track with just the snare hit.

On kind of a side note, is it possible to automate the actual settings of a plugin? Is that what the read function if for?

That's one thing to watch out for - trying to get reverb to effect just one note because of the reverb tail - you have to account for that. Truncating the tail will sound unnatural.

Yes you can automate the setting of a plugin. Just read the PT manual for how to do that. Also there's plenty of stuff on YouTube that will show you how to do that. This is all basic PT functionality you really should read up on. This is yet another one of those things where Google is your new BFF.
