http://www.tascam.com/Products/dm4800.html

Re: Control 24 vs Tascam DM-4800??
The integration of C|24 and PT is wicked good. The DM48 is a nice piece of kit, but it's not the same kind of product. The Tascam is a digital mixer, the C|24 is a control surface.
Why not tell us about how you work, what you do and we'll go from there...

DM-4800 - "With a single button press, the Remote layer provides a 24-fader control surface for control of premiere workstations such as Pro Tools"
hmmm, is that just for the faders?? |

Re: Control 24 vs Tascam DM-4800??
It implements HUI control (the mackie developed protocol) and will give you a certain level of integreation with Pro Tools beyond fader control (ex. pan, some level of plugin control, transport, mute, solo, record arming). It will not be as extensive as a Control 24 since its protocol is developed by digidesign exclusively for pro tools integration.
The tascam advantages are 1) lower price point 2) 8 more preamps 3) can be integrated into many DAW setups (ex. Nuendo, Cubase, Logic and Pro Tools) 4) Can double as a very equipped live digital console (if you mix or record live at all, this is a huge advantage) I'm personally looking at grabbing the Tascam console for use as a control surface in Pro Tools and as a live console for live concerts and live album recording so for me the DM-4800 is a no brainer. If your just doing studio work, solely in Pro Tools, the control 24 may be the better avenue as its built for that purpose. Hope that helps, - Mike |

Re: Control 24 vs Tascam DM-4800??
Hi
Saw this post after making a reply in another, please forgive the double - this is probably a better thread for my question: I have a similar issue here - one of my clients bought a 003, and a DM-4800. He wants to use the 4800 as a control surface for PT LE. I told him it was overkill, that he needed a lot less gear to do this, etc etc etc, but the guy wanted the 4800, and that's what he bought. I suppose that he can use 8 of the 4800's mic pres into the 003 via lightpipe... and of course it can be used for gigs and things like that... but my immediate concern is using the DM-4800 to control ProTools. Now... as mentioned above, the Tascam site SAYS that the DM-4800 is compatible as a control surface for PT, but the manual, which I have right in front of me, doesn't use the word "ProTools" ANYWHERE in the text. It does give instructions for using the DM-4800 as a control surface for Steinberg products, for Digital performer, Logic, Sonar, and as a generic HUI product. No mention of PT. Anyone have insight on how to make this work? Is the DM-4800 connected to the 003's MIDI ports, or do I use a USB cable to the Mac and then configure PT to receive control data this way? I'm pretty savvy in these matters, I just need a starting point... thanks JT

Re: Control 24 vs Tascam DM-4800??
To answer my own question, I heard back from someone at Tascam, who directed me to a document here:

Re: Control 24 vs Tascam DM-4800??
Connect the DM4800 to the Mac via USB. Then PTLE will see the TASCAM under the HUI control surface setup area. Setup 3x and you can control 24 faders.
