Default HD Native PCIe Card - Still Useful?

Hey all!

I was wondering what value the PCIe card holds these days? I recall being able to monitor through plugins at super low latency years ago, but much has changed in the Pro Tools software since then. I know we'd have to find a compatible older Thunderbolt chassis to keep these going, and even that might be an issue with newer Apple OS's since the card has been discontinued, and might not have much support in the future. Perhaps it's time to move onto a different interface like the Presonus Quantum 4848 and ditch the 192's and native card? We use an Apollo for smaller projects, but for the main room could still use a 32 IO or more interface...

Any thoughts much appreciated!
Thanks,
Sig

The HD Native PCIe card is still working fine here - both in workstation PCIe slots and within a TB chassis. This card shares the very same driver set as HDNTB and HDX. I wouldn't worry about losing support for this device if that is your concern.

best,

Jeff

Ya, I guess with M1 Max and possibly M2 coming soon, I wanted a definitive answer whether it was worth investing into an expensive current PCIe / TB chassis or not…what 3 card chassis would be the most recommended for now and into the future? Much appreciated!

Any of the sonnet ones would be fine. Even the older ones because you can just use the apple Thundberbolt adaptor with it.

Bandwidth wise, as far as I'm aware, tb 2 is more than enough for three hdx cards to be running through one cable.

Hope this helps?

The Quantum gets very good reviews, and if I had a Thunderbolt port, that would be a serious contender(as would Carbon). Having said that, I am running 2021.12 with an HDN card and 192 here and have no reason to make a change. Keep in mind that YMMV as I only mix/record music

Actually not true of the newer ones - there’s specific TB3 ones that will only work with UAD and HD Native cards.
