Here's another exemple: Digital Performer 8 was released in 2012, I paid $150 for the upgrade. DP9 is going to be released this year, 3 years later. I will pay $150 for the upgrade. 3 years later.

The fact that "big houses" don't mind paying Avid for their new support plan doesn't change the fact that Avid asks for an unresonable amount of money. PTHD is even more problematic.
Those prices are just a bit off. It can be confusing

You can SUBSCRIBE month-to-month for $29

You can SUBSCRIBE Annually for $299.04 (billed monthly at $24.92)
[you get a reduced monthly rate if you commit for the full year]

If you purchase a NEW Pro Tools license for $899 the Support Plan is included in that price. So you do not have to add another $199, it's already included. Meaning you will own the license (perpetual) and receive any and all upgrades for a full year, plus have access to support.

I myself get confused easily sometimes, thanks for the clarification

LE users should grab Logic in a second. Do a monthly rental of LE if you need to do transfers.
And a Mac computer of course

You may find that $199 per year to stay current turns out to be about the same price when you factor in the new features that are coming, and the fact that features no longer have to be held back until a major new release.
Stop saying that: $199 annually is in no way in line with previous PT upgrades no matter how many times it is being said by a few here. It is ~ twice the cost of previous upgrades where the owner of PT could actually decide (based on the new features and users feedback) if the upgrade was worth paying for (now you are paying blindly for features you have no idea what they will be, when they will actually be realized, how useful will they be or how well will they actually work). We just have to accept that the new model is more expensive and more unpredictable in many ways from most of the users point of view.

And, based on Avid's less than stellar record of putting out bug free versions/features, I would actually hope they'd hold back (and do some proper quality assurance [QA] for a change) on those features until a major new release is ready to ship. If this $199 / year means that Avid puts out features sooner () than what they have done so far, the users will be doing even more QA for Avid than what had to happen with the old upgrade model (case in point: PT 12).

Looking forward to reading how well the soon to be released collaboration & track freeze features will work and how Avid has crippled these for the remaining regular PT users

For LE there is all in one subscriptions. You can start and stop monthly at any time. It's $29/month or $199 if you pay full year in advance.

It's actually $299 for the Annual Subscription

It's $199 for the Support Plan which is annual and gives you a perpetual license and is only available as an upgrade from a previous version, renewal, or new purchase if you buy hardware that comes with PT12.

And there is no LE anymore. Now it's just called Pro Tools | Software or Pro Tools | HD.
LE needed an LE interface in order to open, while Pro Tools | Software uses an iLok and is compatible with almost any ASIO/CoreAudio interface.

OK, so I have a question-

I upgraded from version 9 to version 11 last year before all this came down. I paid $399 for that upgrade, which is now on my iLok.

If I don't purchase a support plan before the last day of 2015, I can still use my 11.x license forever, correct?

Thanks-
