Default Massey Tape-Head on mix bus?

Hi folks.

I sent Steven an email, but I assume he's pretty busy, and don't want to bug him too much....so I'll waste your time instead.

I like to try a mix with the Massey Tape Head on the master fader (just to try), but I notice that it can distort quite easily when sending full mixes (peaking at about -6fB) into it.

I need to add a Trim plug before and lower it to -12dB...

is there another way of adding 'light' tape sat on the master fader? or perhaps another cheap/free plug that may do the trick?

thanks!

Although I love Steve's plugins, I don't find this plugin to be subtle enough for 2 buss. Unless you want a drastic sound.

There are plenty of other options that are quite subtle. Although I don't use any of them.

Cranesong makes one.

McDSP makes one.

URS makes one.

Digidesign has one too.

yup!

That's exactly it! It's not subtle enough for the mix bus...I'll have a look at the suggestions you gave.

thanks!

in alliance with what Produceher said, noting my own personal experience.. I use Steven's Tape Head on Bass, sometimes guitars, or acoustic Piano... it's not all that subtle, got a real "Carve / Boost" thing in the Highs, that make it not the best choice for Vocals, 2 Mixes, or Drum Busses -

I use it on "Individual things" to give those things character, and when I'm "Fishing" in the Plugin menu, for some "Character", I comes up often, and "Stay's" about 1/2 the time.

We discussed this pretty heavily, in a different thread a while back, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK IT OUT HERE

I personally (And I made little a video clip of my workflow in that thread), use a mix of PSP Vintage Warmer, and McDsp AC2 on my master bus.

I prefer tape head on individual tracks instead of the mix buss.
However, I will occasionally use TH on a drum or guitar bus.

I do enjoy vintage warmer on the mix buss.
It's a little more tweakable than tape head.

Damn. I can't believe how long I've been using that plugin and I've never tried it on bass. What's wrong with me. lol.

It's great on distorting a vocal as Sansamp can be too much.

What it's amazing on is a too bright guitar solo. It seems to carve perfectly into a lower freq.

Hmm yeah Kenny, it's one of my "Bass Go-To's" - I'm gonna have to play with this one on Guitars some more, I can "Hear" that "Carve thing" helping the offensive nature of some guitar tracks, by your description, and knowing what the plugin does.

You mean you've never tried the "every single plugin on every single channel" method of mixing?
