Default New Avid MBox Sample Rate Problem

New Avid MBox / PT 8.0.4 cs2 / OSX 10.6.4 / MacBook Pro 2.4 intel Core 2 Duo

Not sure if this is a global problem with all boxes or just a bad box that I have.

Sessions set to 48K play back slow.
Checked the spdif out sample rate, turns out it's actually 44.9 and not very steady.

Sessions set at 96k also playback slow.

no problems with 44.1
Checked the spdif out sample rate, 44.1 solid.

haven't checked 88.2

So it looking like the 48/96 clocking is bad.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

Was the session recorded at 48K or 96K? If it was and you're trying to play it back at 44K then yes it will be slow. Playback the session at 48 or 96 then it will be normal. You can also open up the session that's in 48 or 96k then choose 'Save As Copy' back into 44k. Easy as Cake!!

In the test the original audio was recorded at the specified sample rates.

The tech at the studio checked the actual sample rate with a meter.

The sample rate is wrong @ 48 k the MBox is clocking at a unstable 44.9k.

This is a hardware problem.

I have the same problem with my avid Mbox. The session plays back fine when I connect my 003 or MBox mini..

It's a problem with some of the MBox 3 units. A small portion of them seem to be affected by this sample rate issue.

Contact AVID or your dealer where you bought it from and they will exchange it with a new one.

There's a few threads on here about it.

Ok so I returned and replaced the MBox with another.

Guess what - 48K plays at the wrong speed and 96K plays back with digital hash all over it.

I played the same sessions back on a digi 002 all good.

So this hardware problem that's supposed to be in a FEW of the new Avid Mboxes seems like it may be a bit more wide spread than advertised.

Get in touch with AVID directly. They'll prob send you a loaner if need be and may even compensate you for your troubles.

They've been pretty good to a few people with this issue - so I hear.

Hi guys,

I know this an old thread but I'm replying to this it Sandra report) and I haven't received any responses.

I just want to know is there a setting adjustment that I'm just not familiar with in the Mbox3 or is it hardware issue that causes 48k to sometimes playback slow?? It never seems to be a problem with 44.1k files or sessions.

It happens on every computer that I've tried with this new Mbox.

Cheers,
Joe
