hidiho… what's a pacifica?

other than that, it widely depends on what you are planning to record - the number of microphones out there is practically unlimited.
plus: 80% of them do not sound necessarily 'good' or 'bad', it's a matter of choice for the right situation.

IMO it's the entire signal chain that matters. The best mic plugged into that pre isn't going to make a bad sounding instrument/performance sound good. And some mics/pres that sound fantastic on one source (singer for example). May not sound good on another. However if you're just asking about spending $1200 buck on a mic.....Royer R121, Blue Blueberry, Blue Woodpecker, maybe AKG 414. Some of the mics I'd be looking at if I had that money just laying around .

The PACIFICA and ADL600 units are both incredible boxes. I used to own a pair of the ADL's, sold one off and sooooo regret that. The PACIFICA is a killer solid-state pre-amp that has about the heaviest transformer I've ever felt. Although a single rackspace, that thing is HEAVY! What are you recording? What mic(s) do you have now? WHY are you buying the Pacifica over another item?

Just out of curiosity... what made you decide on that particular preamp? Have you heard it before? Was it recommended to you?

For that kind of cash, there is quite a selection of preamps you could check out as well. I would recommend renting one first, and a few different mics as well. Personally, if I was spending that kind of money on a preamp, I would go with the API A2D, as it would give me 2 MORE inputs on my Digi device, (via S/PDIF) which truly bypass the Digi pres on any device. For this, it makes it popular to use with Pro Tools, and the Focusrite pres in it sound pretty awesome.

Mics... well the mics are an even bigger decision, and it really depends on what you are recording. There is no one, omni-purpose microphone, and there are so many reasons why you might choose one over another. Even if you are only tracking vocals, it's still a good idea to have a selection of mics to choose from, as you may find one performs better than another for a different situation. For instance, if you were recording soft jazz vocals, you'd probably choose a delicate, sensitive ribbon mic to really capture all the subtleties of the voice, but you definitely wouldn't want to use it for screaming metal vocals.

TLM-49, you can get it used for around $1100. $1400 new.

listen to www.myspace.com/tear

the first 4 songs are a TLM-49 into a Pacifica then to a Black Lion Audio modded 002.
