Default A/D converter COMPLICATED

OK this is kind of complicated, I bought the Mbox2 because of its versatility but I wanna run an 8-channel mic preamp off of it. The problem is that because the Mbox2 has only spdif line compatability with it, I've found it almost impossible to find an 8-channel because they are all adat via lightpipe. I was wondering if there was a product out on the market that could convert a spdif line signal to adat. If there is one i need it. Does anyone know of anything that would do this for me or an 8 channel mic pre amp that runs spdif? Please help!

Thats why is complicated. You would run preamps into the Mbox digitally.
If you need 8 external mic preamps feeding your PT system, you'd look at the 002.
Or did I miss your Q ?
good luck,

if i keep the mbox than it's just more versatile and i can carry it around if i want to just mess around but pulling this off would basically turn the mbox into a tiny digi 002 and ssave me a ton of money in the future

The S/PDIF digital format is 2 channel only. Period. Any converters from S/Pdif to lightpipe would be converting for 2 channel lightpipe, not 8.

The MBOX2 is 4 inputs only. Period. 2 channels analog, and 2 channels S/Pdif.

The only way to get 8 separate mic preamps to work with the MBOX2 would be to use a mixer and mix the 8 mic channels down to a stereo feed into the MBOX2.

I am missing something in your description..
Why do you need "spdif into adat optical via lightpipe" to use an external pre amp ??
There are many digital format converters on the market..but the type you are looking for will probably cost more than your Mbox. Nuendo, Euphonix come to mind. I use my TC Finalizer Plus for all kind of 2 channel conversion.

good luck,

OK..I think I've figured out what you trying to do..
To use an 8 channel mic preamp to feed the Mbox like this : 8XADAT optical out>format converter>2channel SPDIF coax> Mbox digital in..Right ?
this box would do it >>
Or this one >>

If you want to record into Pro Tools, you must use a digidesign interface. As I said earlier, the MBOX2 is 4 inputs, period.

The RME interface you linked to would be able to record into other software, and then you could import it into Pro Tools, but you would not be able to use it to record directly into Pro Tools. (you would also need mic preamps, and if you wanted more than 8 inputs, other interfaces)

You WILL NOT BE ABLE TO record more than 4 channels at a time with the MBOX2. Period.

That is an IO unit (just like the 002) to facilitate inputs to a DAW OTHER THAN Pro Tools !!
There is NO WAY you can simultaneously record more than 4 channels of audio with your Mbox 2.
Secondly..there is NO WAY that PT LE will be able to use any other hardware interface !
There is of course, the MPowered solution..

good luck,
