Default Recording

I have been used to Tascam 800 where Just recording myself I could start/stop by press of footswitch. This is not possible with the MBOX Studio or Pro Tools Studio at this time. Avid say’s it is in the works but I have been waiting since January. I got rid of the Tascam 800 before finding this out. I feel like I have wasted my time and money here. Had such high hopes. Maybe someone has a solution and could point me to it.

This is also a good reason to use auto-punch. If you are new to that, its really simple. Enable pre-roll(I like 2 bars), place the cursor at the exact spot where you want recording to kick in and hit F12. Playback will start with your set pre-roll and recording will drop in where the cursor was placed. There's more to it, but that's the simplest breakdown. If this might be your solution, hit youtube and search for videos on the feature to see the rest of the details. BTW, I'm in a similar boat and currently am using a Presonus Faderport V2 with neyrinck's V-Control Pro software and it works great

Another method: Go to Prefs and check the box for auto-create a new playlist when loop recording>select the portion of audio you wish to replace and cut it>put up another track>put this new track into record-ready(with Loop Recording set)>swipe across the timeline to include all the blank, plus some pre-roll. Enter record and keep playing the part until you know you have a good take. Then copy/paste back onto the original track, add some cross-fades and delete the temp recording track

Also do not understand why it should be so hard to put that capability in their products.

I could not agree more, but while we wait, try my alternative method

Thank you, I will give it a try. To me this method is like setting a timer on a camera mounted on a tripod and running to get into the scene before it occurs.

I still have to ask how hard is this to put the footswitch capability in and why something as useful and generic as this is, why was it left out of an expensive (for me and other’s like me) interface as the MBox Studio. I have been waiting 6 months. It is disheartening.

I actually used the foot-switch for years until I started messing with the way you mention. I actually prefer that method now. I don't have to worry about missing the down beat on the punch and feet free with the pre-roll is awesome.

That may be true for you but having been used to using a footswitch to start/stop a recording I do not know how long it will take me to get used to that method. Not having the footswitch ability has thus kept me from wanting to try and record something so far and I can’t seem to get past this headblock. I feel like I have wasted my money.

Yeah I totally understand.

At work I train new hires on shortcuts instead of mouse moving all over place. They are all used to old school habits. I tell them to do it really slow and the speed come naturally.
