I know I keep posting different results...I am following the directions. I opened a new session after reading the last post and got

415@1024

Perhaps it was becuase I did not open a new session for each test.

That is normal. Once you hit the peak of your system and really stress it you'll see the upper level vary around 5 Dverbs or so. You may also find that inserting that last Dverb or 2 may take awhile as you are really stressing the system. Killer job on the 415@1024, you made history.

Now post us the Dverb@128(or 64 if your I/O box shows it) so you can make history again. If you have the time, do the test 2-3 times to confirm your numbers at 128. Start all 3 from a fresh reboot. A bit of a pain but you are in the DUC history books now and there's no going back.

Myself and/or Sunburst would like you to do one other test for us in a few days if you can. We cant announce it as of yet.

Thanks a million for doing this!

So what does one do with a native HD 11??

First single CPU native system to bust 400. I think the Mac Pros were up around 480 or so but thats a far more expensive machine. 6 months from now when there are some less expensive i7 motherboards and RAM prices drop some more we will have very powerful machines for the price of a current mid to high end Intel Quad.

Also to note (not trying to take anything away from the results) but the return of HyperThreading is not giving the boost that doubling the core count did when we went from Dual to Quad cores. I think its safe to say that the improvement is from the new cache hierarchy/integrated memory controller and the triple channel RAM. The i7 is a memory Bandwidth beast. If the Tock cycle adds more cache we will see another boost for PT.

Now we need to be able to run PT on 64bit OS's to take advantage of that additional RAM.

Just checked prices for some parts and the difference was not as much as I originally thought
Q9550 + 4GB DDR2 1066 RAM + Gigabyte EP45 DS3R vs Core i7 920 + 3GB DDR3 1333 + Gigabyte GA EX58 UD5 = only about $170 in favor of the Q9550.

considering the boost in performance from around 320-340 to 415 D-verbs, the expense seems justified.

When digging around all I found on mac pro was 323 that was a thread from 2007 here http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=196279

where's the 480 result ? and how if the 323 is an accurate figure? the changes in mac pro have been very slow and incremental, I can't imagine the change to Harpertown could increase by over 100 Dverbs ?

I just cant justify the cost of those 8 core rigs for the price/performance factor which is very little over a Quad with fast ram.

3JDamon got over 500 Dverbs on the Opteron Quad a few years back. It ended up being a bug that he discovered though. The Dverb wars.

You're more than welcome to start it and maintain it for the next 18-24 months.

Myself, Sunburst, Allan Hallada, MattP, Nikki-k and a few others are retired from the stickies. It's a ton of work. Wait till you see the emails you'll get. We'll pass the torch over to Transputer.

Shane
