This spec does not make sense.

I can confirm that is EXACTLY what they mean and what they want. The wording is terrible.

If you're gonna write a spec that confuses literally everyone who has to follow it, are you even really writing a spec?

Yes. I have conversed with them at length regarding the spec. There is no speculating. This is what they want.

Their requirement makes sense when you consider that they are adding both data and audio compression. The compression of data and audio may well be different amounts for different streaming situations. What would be nice is software that would allow listening to exactly what they are doing.

They didn't really explain the logic behind it. But the person I spoke with said they polled industry mixers and professionals who preferred this new spec over the old one. It was also explained that this new spec was the result of numerous customer complaints of differences in volume levels of their shows and that this new new spec would provide a more consistent base. When I pointed out the confusion in their wording of the spec the response was very defensive so the subject wasn't pushed further. My goal was to merely get clarification of the words on paper.

Sounds like they've moved to use some audio compression to even out volume levels. They probably don't want to reveal precisely what they are doing for competitive reasons.

I just watched the latest "Ozark" on Netflix this weekend.
All 9 episodes and I didn't have to reach for the remote once!
I will ask the Mixer what spec they delivered. Whatever it was it just worked!

The new spec didn't come out until July 2018 so there's a good chance Ozark was grandfathered in to the old spec since older shows and shows already in production did not have to be delivered that way. They're only enforcing it on anything mixing after July 2018. And who even knows how they're enforcing it.
