Default PT and 4gb ram limit

Hey DUC

I got 16gb of ram in my mac pro, and I'm currently running Leopard (10.5.8).
As far as I understand each program can only adress 4gb af ram under 10.5.8, right?

Going 64 bit on snow-leopard, that that limit then gone?

Best,
Boe

32 bit programs can only access 4 GB in 10.5 or 10.6
currently Pro Tools is only 32 bit

As I understand it, it is Application dependent. If the app is 32bit the four gigabyte limitation still applies, if the app is 64bit the 4GB limit is no longer there.

Ah, ok Mark. We'll wait for that then.
Do you know if 64bits are in Digis pipeline?

Best,
Boe

I really hope that 64 bit is on the horizon for Pro Tools. Making that transition is very tough as Sonar has been a 64 bit application for 4 years now and is finally being used in the 64 bit version by the majority of the users. I can only imagine that the first version of Pro Tools 64 bit will be pretty buggy and have quite a few issues with users. They will probably have to release two versions to begin with so that people who own hardware that doesn't have 64 bit drivers will still be able to be part of the upgrade. But I'm just speculating. It could be that once Pro Tools goes 64 bit, the whole industry will take 64 bit much more serious and transition. Sonar doesn't hold that kind of weight in the industry.

Which may be part of the reason why they dropped PPC support. With limited resources because of the economy and what else, they can concentrate all programming efforts on the Intel 64 bit stuff, to bring them current...

Would you guesstimate PT9 or farther out than that?
Thanks...

Thank you for at least acknowledging this. 64 bit is something that neither MOTU or Apple has made any public mention of. Take your time and make it right.
