Default Thoughts On Universal Audio 6176

I am looking at the Universal Audio 6176 Channel Strip, I was wondering if any of you have it and what your thoughts were.
Thank you,
Maker

The UA 6176 is great unit. I have 2 x Avalon 737, 1 x stereo Trident MTA Series 80B and unfortunately only 1 x UA 6176, which is my number 1 pre. The preamp is clean/open, the EQ is basic but good enough, there is a whole lot of switchs for impedance, 15db pad, line/mic/DI. The great part of this is the compressor if u want to call it that....does not have that squashing effect like other comps do...just controls db level.
The preamp of the 6176 (610)and the comp section (1176LN) can be used separately, So u can run another preamp though the 1176 section of the 6176....what more can I say.....GREAT THING

Yeah, ditto what AEW said, although I'm just starting to use it. Great sound and especially great layout....you can keep different things (mic/line input/ direct in ) plugged in and switch between them. It's also great to have the join/split mode for the 1176 compressor part, although I guess I'll mostly keep it in line because the 1176 adds a nice punch even when the compressor is off.
All in all, a real bargain considering that you get a great pre and also a kick-ass comp....

Is this the same preamp that is in the 2-610? If it is, I would characterize it as anything but clean and open. It is attenuated in the highs and lows, low fidelity, low headroom, not enough available gain within its sweet spot, and has an annoying upper midrange with far too much distortion for my taste. Other than that, everything else is great though.

The 610 is one of the most character pres I have. Depending on how your over-drive it, you can go from super silky to in-your-face aggressive. It's awesome. And, the added bonus of an 1176...well, that's just a match made in heaven. Buy one or TWO!

atlasproaudio,
Maybe your unit was defective? I also noticed that you don't sell any UA products. I'll take your review with an ounce of salt.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> Same thoughts here! With all due respect and the consciousness that we're talking sound i.e something highly subjective.....the 6176 is top notch both sonically and construction-wise.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">You should probably take my comments with a grain of salt, like anyone's. But in reference to your question about whether I had a defective unit, the answer is no. We were previously dealers for UA, so we heard many of these units, and each one was consistantly average sounding. This is in comparison to everything from Great River to API to Daking and a lot of other brands in between. The UA, never even came close on many levels. But like you said, it's subjective, and that's what I hear. But if you think a McDonalds hamburger comes to the level of a good steak, that is a subjective call I suppose as well.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The mic-pres you mention above all sound totally different to each other.
