The unofficial (but from the mouth of an AVID person) answer is that AVID is no longer supporting transfer of Protools software licenses (PTHD 9, 10 or 11). I imagine they may be tight lipped about it, because of the SH!@t storm that will ensue when they officially state there policy.

Oh no, you CAN sell your hardware and transfer ownership of that. It's just that the only option for the license is to sell an ILOK that is tied to the sellers account and therefore gives the buyer no option for upgrades. All that being said, the fact that HD cards are no longer supported, and won't run anything past PTs 10, it's really not THAT big a deal except for those that were hoping to get a PTHD 11 software license to run on 3rd party hardware.

Oh you mean that secret that has been widely discussed on DUC for some time now? The one that aligns practice with what is written in the Avid EULA, and therefore should not be a huge surprise to anybody.

There is some discussion on DUC of Avid customer support allowing what seem to be case-by-case transfers of HD licenses where there was a bundled hardware transfer involved.

As for other comments here.... Software licensing 101, read the EULA,... you do not *own* Pro Tools (or most other software), you have a license to use it, the EULA controls what you can do with that license.

No, just the firm hand of Avid, the software owner, we are all just licensed users.

But up until recently, AVID was happy to (legally) allow you to transfer (via the ILOK site) your license (with hardware of course). Now if you decide to sell your CORE card, the buyer has NO way to acquire a license to USE IT, short of the seller relinquishing an ILOK tied to THIER account with the license on it. As I said though, since PT10HD is the last version to support HD hardware ANYWAY, this change is not really that big a deal.

"new low price"? Go ahead and buy a used HD TDM PT10HD system (I happen to have one for sale). You just cant get an upgrade to PT11 (which wouldn't work with your hardware anyway).
