Sorry for hijacking this thread but maybe it will be useful for anyone else with a similar issue. The Level knob I refer to is the Level Control on the right hand side. That moves when that CC 74 comes along which I also see in the MIDI Event List. (BTW that's how I know it was only CC 74 sending and not other CC's.)
I've taken your advice and used the Input Filter to eliminate that CC 74 altogether, so it's seems to have fixed that problem ( so far so good). Thanks again for your patience.

Aha. If you right click the knob, you'll see "Learn MIDI CC" and "Forget MIDI CC 74." Presumably. Mine is assigned to CC 7, apparently by default.

Mine just says Learn MIDI CC, Forget MIDI CC 7, Set Min, Set Max, Invert Range. No mention of the elusive CC 74.

Then it must have been a 7 that turned it down. That's the way it works on mine, anyway.
