Does PT12 open sessions from 9 and 10?

Can't find any info, but seem to recall seeing that it doesn't.

If not, can 12 co-install with 9 on Win7?

12 will open sessions back to v5.1 here on the Mac. I assume it's the same on PC.

The only catch might be an older session that was saved on a mac, without the "enforce mac/pc compatibility" box checked. I remember that from PT 5 and 6, not sure when it finally went away, I think it was around PT8.

The most common compatibility issue is having all your old RTAS plugins used in that session available, and installed, as AAX-64 plugins. Either way the session should still open.

There are some reports of bugs opening sessions in recent Pro Tools 12 releases. You can find those threads by searching on DUC or with google.

Before commiting to an upgrade, test out what you intend to do with a free Pro Tools 12 demo license (ideally installed on a separate clean boot partition.

There is no supported co install of Pro Tools 9 with any other version of Pro Tools, and i suspect it would not work.

i think there used to be a way to start a session without loading any plugins .. does this exist or am i crazy ... wait, i am crazy !!!! but does it exist ??

Yes, and it is documented in the same places it has always been. And findable easily by Google. I am not sure what this has to do with the OPs question.
