Default Need a System - thoughts?

All,
So the session went well all day yesterday, but this morning my system was black screened and would NOT boot up. It is an older (5 to 6 year old) quad core. Looks like I will be buying a new system this week. Looking for suggestions? Motherboard, Chip and ram.

Any ideas? Pretty sure there is a thread somewhere but looking for people with solid systems on PT HD8.0

Thanks in advance.

Doc

The web site is a train wreck right now but I remember some current HP workstations being officially supported.

I have been very very happy with the Dell 690 workstation I bought three years ago. It has been far more stable than my previous home-brew that was made using DUC suggestions.

Hey Chris, You have a HD3 with PCI cards, not PCIe cards correct, correct? The easy route would be to just order a digi approved Dell or HP. Or do you want to build your own?

Here's a link to "Abomb97"'s build for HD3 PCI. It's not an i7, but most of the confirmed i7 builds around the HD forum are running only HD2 (including mine).

Back to your system, is it just a dead component? Does the BIOS boot up? Perhaps just a dead hard drive. Might be able to squeeze a little more life out of it. I'm sure you've thought of all that already though.

BTW:

I have done this so far:

1. Reseated EVERYTHING!
2. Bought a new Power Supply
3. Tried the old drive

All new drives were swapped out about a month ago. Everything was solid until this morning when I came into the studio the screen was black. Rebooted and it came up but then froze. I then started trouble shooting. no luck yet. The power supply lets it come to the bios but if I go to alter any setting it freezes or IF I get the fixes it boots and then goes back to a black screen. I was able to get to windows 2 times and each time it froze up. Ran scan disk, FROZE. I am going to scan all the drives on my external drive dock and see if that helps. This is VERY odd....

Thanks

Doc

That is great if I were to upgrade (4K) to the PCI-e cards. Not on the budget plan right now.

Not a mac guy either.

i just bought a workstation 690 off of ebay for less than 400 dollars. 4 gigs ram, harddrives out the whazzoo, 2 pci-x slots. i was using pci slots, but i was having a pain of a problem for whatever reason. 400 bucks, got a sweet computer with the right slots, and everything is running smoothly now.

pthd was made to run on computers 6-8 years ago was it not? No reason to buy the fastest computer ever, when you can get a quad intel xeon with 4 gigs ram on a digi tested system on the cheap!

Kil,
Does that 690 support the HD3 system with 3 cards that are PCI. Also what is the CPU? Quad core? Sata drives?

I have all the drives, just want to slap it in and roll.

Thanks,
Doc
