Default 6.9 and \"Auto Join\" grayed out?

I'm experimenting with my Command-8 and version 6.9

In the Automation Enable window (command 5) the "auto join" button is grayed out.
How do I "un-gray" it?

According to the "What's New In Protools 6.9" file you can select individual tracks to auto-match when in auto-latch.
However the directions for selecting all tracks and selecting an individual track are the same:

Quote from "What's new in Protools 6.9.pdf":

AutoMatch Function
During playback, you can stop writing of automation
on Write-enabled or Latch-enabled
tracks and return automation to previously written
levels by ramping up or down according to
the AutoMatch time.
To end an automation pass on a single Write- or
Latch-enabled track with AutoMatch:
? During playback, at the point where you want
to stop writing automation on a track, hold
Ctrl/Clutch and press the F4 switch on the
channel.
The track stops writing automation and ramps
back to the previous automation level. The
length of the automation ramp is determined by
the AutoMatch Time preference.
To end an automation pass on all tracks with
AutoMatch:
? During playback, at the point where you want
to stop writing automation, hold Alt
+Ctrl/Clutch (Windows) or Option+Ctrl/Clutch
(Macintosh) and press the F4 switch on a Write-
or Latch-enabled channel.
end quote

What is the F4 switch on the channel and how is it different from the f4.Fader Mute switch on the righthand side of the Command-8?

so maybe I just said too many words in that post and didn't make enough sense

Is Auto-Join only available to users of the more expensive Digidesign control surfaces?

Dang.
Thanks for the clarificiation.

So for the second part of my question that was so poorly worded at the top:

Is it possible to have several channels writing automation in auto-latch and just automatch one?
The instructions as best as I have tried to follow only allow you to drop all automation writing/updating tracks simultaneously.

Thanks,

Greg

Why would you exclude a feature for a current product but include it for a discontinued one?
Is the Command 8 now excluded from software updates?

I'd like to know.

Upon further review,

Why?

Why not have auto-join available for people who are mixing completely independant of a control surface?
Even if you're just mouse-mixing, why shouldn't you be able to use auto-join?
