It's a matter of perspective. Unless someone hires me to record session guitars I'm unemployed almost all the time, but nobody whines about it.

I have been reading "Avid is doomed!" postings for the past 10 years and for a while, under Greenfield, it really did look as if that was the case. It wouldn't surprise me to see Avid still struggling on in another ten years time!

These redundancies seem to be in middle management and that is where Avid needs to lose weight urgently, so it would appear to be a step in the right direction.

But that is not where their problems are coming from - with the exception of Hollywood and those that work with Hollywood, customers are drifting away from the old 'standard' packages of PT and MC. It isn't cost and it isn't the subscription model, but the lack of development. When it was PT v. tape, PT was king. When it was MC v. Steenbeck, MC was king.

But today, it is PT v. Reaper/CuBase/Nuendo and MC v. Premier and Avid users are complaining that there has been insufficient development to keep up with the competition.

If they had been reasonable with the HD support plan they would have more of my money and I suspect a lot of others too!!!!!

This is exactly right. Just charge $899 for Pro Tools and include the HD features for everyone. Charge extra for the TRULY pro features like Atmos panning and big console integration. The big studios will always pay a premium for that stuff, because they need it. Every other DAW out there has surround and automation built in. Who does Avid thing they're kidding these days with this stupid HD differentiation?

The telling thing is when you read all the employees comments at glassdoor.com, they all say the exact same things we all have said, upper management is clueless, mid and lower level are the only ones that get what it is we want.

Even their employees say that they are completely abandoning the mid tier Protools HD users, which is the category I place myself in.

I'd say this pooch is screwed. A serially mismanaged company, just crazily incompetent. I just hope, as I have for a while, that whoever acquires the corpse of Avid will be benevolent and look after Pro Tools.

These are real people who lost their jobs. Don't use their predicament as an "I told you so" about support plans.
