Not aware of any single drive issues with those cards, but that does not mean they don’t exist. Fast cloning of a small boot drive is a good example of using partitions/drives to optimize backup. Certainly a trade off in decisions. For some people incremental clones get around this, for others yes keeping it small is a good choice. One thing I use to do for example is clone the small boot drive back onto partitions on external audio and sample drives. That way you end up with lots of recovery options always at your fingertips. |

Ah Ok thanks, yes this will be perfect for me thanks for the heads up about the dual adaptor and the EVO's and the replies.

"John Wolf 2.0 out of 5 stars Fails on Mac Pro with only one SSD blade installed. June 15, 2019 Verified Purchase I purchased the card to get the maximum performance out of a Samsung 970 Pro NVME on a classic Mac Pro. Normally, an NVME blade installed in a classic Mac Pro slot can only reach 1500MB/sec due to the gen 2 PCIe slots that the cMP has. With this card installed in a 16x slot, it can combine 8x gen 2 to create 4x gen 3 speeds. With a blade on this card, I could reach over 2900MB/Sec from the same 970 Pro. Problem is, with only one blade installed, it will hang and then restart the Mac when copying large files. I could have purchased another SSD, but knowing that the card is flakey with just one led me to return the card... I just couldn't trust it. They also included the wrong screw sizes for the NVME standoffs." Personally, I wrote this off, but make your own judgement.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
My idea would not be to RAID the two drives on the card but have one with an OS and the other as a storage drive for samples/instruments (point taken about getting everything on one drive) if I can't get everything on one drive. Would this work?

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
ALSO, if I can manage to get everything on to one NVMe drive is there any benefit to buying the Crest card that accepts two drives? If there is no benefit can you recommend a card that accepts one NVMe drive?

This is a dumb as a rock plain non-switched card. It will directly wire a NVMe M.2 SSD card to 4 x PCIe 2 lanes in a Mac Pro. What you want is a switched card like the one I have pointed out earlier that takes the pairs of PCIe 2 lanes though a switch and gives you a PCIe 3 lane. That was the whole point. Double the raw IO performance out of your tired old Mac Pro cheesegrater. And no I am not worried by feedback from a random Amazon purchasers. These cards are absolutely designed to run with a single M.2 NVMe card. |

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
I was under the impression I was answering his question as to an adapter that would accept one drive. We already discussed that it would be at the expense of performance.
