Default Input Monitoring

I still can't figure out what the problem is with Input monitoring with a RMe Raydat card and pro tools 10.3.3 unlike Logic the input monitoring works great with this card..I love Pro tools and am sick of going back and forth ...Can't you fix this for good for us instead of spending an extra thousand dollars for something that should be in the software....Input monitoring not comb filter monitoring ....

I'll give it a go in a reply. I don't have a Raydat, though I do have PT10.3.3 and an RME Fireface 800 (on PC) which also has the built in software Totalmix monitor mixer. I'm 99% sure the Raydat has the same Totalmix app. What you may be having issues with is in PT10 is turning off the built in live input program monitoring so that you can properly use your RME Totalmix monitoring instead. If both PT10 and the RME is monitoring together you will have odd slap back echos and sometimes phasing and other oddities...

In PT10 there is a pull down menu for "Low Latency Monitoring", which is an odd name for it as it doesn't work like it did (though the same name was used) in prior PT versions. In a way it is now really simply turning OFF the PT10 input monitoring. So it simply turns OFF the input monitoring in PT altogether so that you can then use your DSP monitoring or RME/Totalmix for the live monitoring. Once you activate the "Low Latency Monitoring" Pro Tools will then allow tape style punch in and recording with your DSP monitoring, and the only time you will hear audio from Pro Tools is when it is playing back, but once you hit RECORD you won't hear the live audio through PT but that is great if you have Totalmix setup to monitor the live mics. The only catch to it is PT10 only toggles this monitoring properly on just one output pair, and this pair cannot be changed it's fixed. In the past PT didn't have this option at all for 3rd party devices, and now the option is nicely there but dumbed down by being only workable on one output pair. On my RME ff800 it's the first analog 1-2 outputs. Luckily with Totalmix you can then route them to whatever outputs you want to, and in my case I route them to my ADAT outputs to some outboard converters. The main drawback is you can then only have one mix coming from the PT software playback, but at least with Totalmix you can generate plenty of different mixes on the live input sides, it's only the software playback that will be limited to one stereo pair. This still doesn't help folks using an outboard mixer to monitor things, but with Totalmix it's workable.

Anyway, it works great on my system and I bet your Raydat setup will be similar you just have to figure out which stereo pair. It's possibly your first choice in the pull down output assignments, or most likely it's the pair that is at the farthest left side on your Totalmix mixer? Once you set pro tools to output that pair you can then hear your tracks in PT10 coming off that one pair, and then mix what ever live input with it when you are overdubbing using Totalmix. Sorry this isn't the clearest but you probably got the point.

Hope that helps!

Default Input Monitoring

Or just use MuteTone (Mac) or AutoMute (Windows)

Like the explanation.

But passed on this issue, use an HD setup.

Unhappy Re: Input Monitoring

I understand the work around but it definitely is problematic ..I don't understand why not putting input monitoring on and off is an issue .I mean I understand some of the other features not being included but why not include the input monitoring option?

I still think it's a way for AVID to limit and/or dumb down (in professional applications mostly) how well PT actually works on 3rd party interfaces.

Heck when they first opened up their code to work on 3rd party interfaces they didn't even offer ANY way that you could shut off the software monitoring. At least now they do albiet limited to one stereo output. That said some folks seem to be happy monitoring right through the software (or use the MUTETONE plug in which I'm not truly sold on) but to me the latency is still much quicker via DSP monitoring an Totalmix on my RME.
