Default PreAmp/Compressors

Looking to buy a Tube preamp. Dont have too much money to spend. 100-250 max. Have been looking at the

ART DPS II Stereo Tube Preamp with Digital Out
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/180631/

ART Tube PAC
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/180069/

Not sure if these are the best I can get for my money. They seem to have some good options. Someone want to shed some light?

Thanks

The Studio Projects VTB-1 seems to get good reviews

i have the ART TUBE DPS II
it's not that bad, but it's also not amazing
i never expected it to be for the price.
but it works
the only time i really use it is for an
outside kickdrum mic and a snare bottom mic

they also make the ART Tube TPS II which
is the same as the DPS without the digital option
i think it goes for 170

I never had much luck with the ART tube stuff.....I A/B'd the ART Stereo Tube MP with the TL Audio PA2 about 7 years ago. At the time the two were priced about the same. The TL blew the ART out of the water! So, I bought it. It is still in use at my studio today! I've seen these used on Ebay for about $250. I paid $600 for mine new in 1997.
