Default OMNI or 8x8x8 for 5.1 FX editing?

Discuss.......

I'm an FX editor, working 90% of the time in 5.1.

I'm exchanging to HDX from an old HD3 rig and 96 i/o, if it were you, which would you choose? Is there any reason to spend the extra to get the 8x8x8, or will the OMNI do everything I should need it to.

Cheers

I've got an OMNI and also cut fx most of the time. Having the preamps on board is super handy for recording little things here and there.

The only drag is if the temperature in my room gets a little too hot the fans come on, it's certainly not terrible and definitely liveable, but still annoying considering it's meant to be in a control room.

Do you have a separate monitor controller on your rig? The Omni has built in monitoring control, which the 8x8x8 doesn't.

The Omni is smaller and lighter (possibly handy if you're a wandering freelancer).

It's cheaper.

The thing that stopped me getting one is the lack of flexibility in routing for multiple simultaneous analogue/digital ins and outs, so I'm going 8x8x8. If you just need 6 analogue outs for monitoring (and the potentially handy twin preamps mentioned in the other post) I'd stick with the Omni.

I see you're in London, hi if I know you!

Omni actually does 8 outs, not 6.

Also, it has a headphone out, which can be a separate cue mix (like a 9th and 10th channel).

It also has fold down capabilities.

With the 8x8, you'd have to buy this stuff extra, in addition to shelling out $1000 more with the trade.

Hi,
I never said it had 6, I said if he only needed 6 it'd be fine.

but if you already have a mic amp and a monitor controller the "512 as it should be known" (8x8x8) is the way to go, monitoring and digital VT layback at once....

but if I was just editing.... an omni would be for me...

cheers

Thanks for he knowledge everyone, I do believe that it's the OMNI for me then.

I have a monitor controller on my desk already, so won't need the added 5.1 features of the OMNI. But the preamps will be handy for sure!!

I don't think we've met Pete, although I'm currently mixing at 'Halo' on Noel Street, so not from you! (Where you there at HDX Launch last night?)

Thanks again

No, was busy.

Not been down there since Pepper went under. You in studio 1? Nice room, good to see it back in action.

Yes, Studio one. It's great to see it back up after the pepper debacle, I really like the room. I'll be in there for the next three weeks!! Should be fun.

I use the OMNI to feed a 5.1 surround system, sperate Stereo speakers (auratones) and also another Stereo Speakers on large LCD, and have 2 additional outs to headphones plus the headphone jack on the front. In addition to feeding a stereo digital dorrough via spdf, with digital preamp coming in on spdif, and a Korg keyboard coming in lightpipe with my mac also coming in. And still have the 2 MIC inputs on front and back free.

I don't think the 8x8x8 can do all that. Come to think of it, I doubt any other device out there can do all that for this size and cost.

The fan noise is still annoying though for editing dx or mixing soft passages.
