NASA's sound archives really are amazing. They have a huge amount of resources available on both archive.org as well as soundcloud.

I believe most if not all are in the public domain, but obviously everyone should do their own research before considering using them in commercial projects, as I'm just regurgitating articles i've read over the years. But it's worth a browse at least for ideas, some of the cosmic recordings and sounds of deep space are so wonderful and weird. And of course the mission control recordings are pretty cool as well.

Default What Space Really Sounds Like

It said It was caused by Magnetic fields, most of them anyway

The rings of Saturn were actual debris hitting the satellite

Of course, this isn't actually a sound recording, any more than a spectrogram really shows you what sound actually "looks" like - it's just a convenient way of interpreting the data.

You could play the cassette from an old Pixel Vision camera on any tape deck, and conclude that's what pictures "sound" like - but it's really just meaningless.

It's not like taking an actual recording of Bats, or Insects, and pitch-shifting it in to the audible frequency.

Nobody's able to look at a print-out of zeroes and ones, and recognise it as a particular recording of Beethoven's 5th - but interpret it as a properly decoded audio stream an it's a different matter.

That party-pooping pedantry aside, a few years back, when the "sound" of Voyager passing through the plasma fields at the edge of the solar system was publicly released - I was immediately struck by how much the two moments when you hear "space screaming" reminded me of the 1979 trailer for the movie "Alien".

Properly creepy, and I was surprised it, or something like it hasn't since surfaced in any sci-fi movies.

Exactly. If one were transpose all the electromagnetic activity in the air around us into the audible spectrum, it would not represent the "sound" of Earth at all.

It's a cool, fun exercise, but I wish they hadn't chosen to describe it as "What space sounds like" because it isn't, at all.
