Default Drum samples??

How do I use CD's that have individual sampled drum hits, such as Naked Drums, MIXtended drums from Big Fish Audio, etc. Right now I have an Alesis SR-16 drum machine. I'd like to be able to write drum parts on that, put the midi info into ProTools, then use the better sounds from the CD's. I've gotten conflicting storys from people at music stores, some say I need a syncronizer, some say I don't. Also, is there an easier way, could someone give me some tips or ideas. Thanks a million!!!

I've recorded my drum machine into protools as midi in the past.
(synced so that when I hit record in protools it automatically starts playing the drum machine.
then applied better drum sample to it via Battery and the Drumkit From Hell sample library.
the only work involved is transposing the notes in protools to the corresponding cell in Battery.

basically what you need is a sampler such as Reason, Battery or Sample Tank, etc.

Protools is your sequencer

if you go with Reason it has a built in sequencer that is the bomb. If you're using OSX and PTLE6.1 you can route the Reason samplers directly into protools via Rewire as audio.

there are TONS of threads about this type of stuff so check those out as well.
Also go to the Propellerhead web site and check out Reason......it will give you everything you need then some!!
hope this helps
J

Thank you. One more question, how would I do it if I want to use the Naked Drums CD? You may have already answered it and I just didn't totally understand... Sorry, this is new to me and pretty confusing.

exactly the same thing.
the only difference is that I use the DKFH drum sample library.....you would use the library of your choice.

I really suggest you check out Reason.
especially since I saw your other post about upgrading to OSX. PTLE 6.1 and Reason (and a good drum sample library) are all you need. You might want to get a cheap midi keyboard with velocity sensitive keys and a mod wheel (about $90.00) The drum machine if it's Midi can work as well but you won't have velocity control.

I used Battery in OS9. it's a good program but the OSX RTAS version won't be out until September.

with Reason you get WAY more goodies.

In OSX with PTLE 6.1 having Rewire support, I can't think of a better solution that Reason. It runs as a standalone so you can take it and make grooves up at the cottage on your laptop. (no Protools hardware required!)
then come home and pipe it directly into Protools as audio.

I'm still waiting for my copy!!

Good Luck,
Jeff
