Default Infamous Sample Rate Problem - Can't get above 48khz

I have PT 8.0.5 and a FW 410 interface, and 48khz is the highest the sample rate will go.

--BUT WAIT! --

my problem is weirder than this: I set the default audio device in WinXP to the "SoundMax" onboard card, and - lo and behold - other sample rates drop down in the PT menu when the FW410 is no longer the default device for windows!

--BUT WAIT! --

here's the weird part: once I'm in a session, the session info states it's 44.1khz, and the next time I open PT, the other sample rates aren't on the dropdown menu anymore.

TO SUMMARIZE:

-Every time I start or restart my computer, PT gives me all the sample rates on first go.

-Once PT is open, the sample rate reverts to 44.1khz.

-If I close PT and start it back up, sample rates above 48khz disappear from the new session dropdown menu.

Anyone else have this problem? I feel like I am close to solving this if I can figure out what is happening when PT creates a session to revert to 44.1. For the longest time I thought this was a FW410 problem, but now I'm starting to think it's a PT problem. I have read SO MANY POSTS on this believe me I have done my homework. If anyone can help, I would really, really appreciate it.

Default Re: Infamous Sample Rate Problem - Can't get above 48khz

SOLVED: Got rid of the soundcard that came with the motherboard and got a cheap PCI card.

And updated to Windows 7.

Then set the cheap card to the default.

88.2 all the way baby...

Hope this helps others... there's numerous threads on this but no solutions. The way I figure, either XP wouldn't play right, or the soundcard that came with the P5 Asus board was messing things up, or both.
