Default Confused by 888/24

I picked up an old mix system off ebay last month but something has me puzzled.

I have output 1-2 of the first 888/24 set as my main stereo outputs in pro tools. I have an 8 way Stereo jack to jack loom so I changed two of the jack's to xlr to fit the output of the 888/24. This then goes to my main mixer. I noticed a hum in the monitor mix coming from these two channels. So thinking I may have wired something incorrectly (ground loops ets) I got two xlr to jack cables (mic cables) and replaced my loom. Now I get really bad phasing but the hum is gone! Any ideas?

I also noticed that only channels 1 & 2 meter lights are working on the first 888/24. I can understand this when playing back as I am only using 1-2 outs but when I am recording and have several channels in use, surely the 888/24's should be responding to input? Is there a setting I need to change?

Are you going from balanced (888) to unbalanced (mixer) or is it balanced all the way? I'm suspecting you're connecting wrong pins because of the unbalanced jack.

XLR: 1 = ground, 2 = positive, 3 = negative
TRS: sleeve: ground, ring = negative, tip = positive

So...

Your phasing issue will go away once you connect positive to positive and negative to negative. And the ground hum will go away if you unbalance properly.

Live folks do it by connecting negative to the ground pin, but at least HD interfaces say you would have to leave negative unconnected (thus only connecting ground and positive)

Double-check your connections and it should be okay.

The 888/24 meters always show the Output Level, you can't change that. You are supposed to view the recording level of the Audio Channel you are recording on the software meters in the Mix Window and/or Edit Window
