It looks great, but I was waiting on the announcement to decide on whether I was going for PT9 or PT10, and honestly I'm not sure what to do now. The crossgrade (from LE) PT10 version is almost twice the price of PT9, and I'm not sure the new features are worth this price difference...

Opinions?

Looks like Avid has shown you that you can't get what you want and get your price as well.
Looks like a very questionable price structure and the end of the line for their lowend hardware.

If they can achieve this price structure for the software then the cost of designing, testing and maintaining the smaller hardware no longer makes sense.
If they can get $600 for the software that's already more than the mBox and the mBox Mini.

Looks like that's the direction they are headed.

Yeah, maybe no 004 series is in the works afterall. I was kind of hopping for a Omni "lite" type thing. Maybe with pcie or Ethernet connectivity.

The upgrade pricing is somewhat ridiculous, and is going to keep me on PT8. I just can't justify spending so much money for so few changes.

Well this pricing does at least show why they were willing to unlock the hardware requirement.
Not sure it won't work since Pro Tools is still a big buzz word.

I know the feeling.

My particular concern is that Avid is moving it's products away from the low end and prosumer levels. I bought a 001 because I really could not afford nor justify TDM. Then I bought the 003R, bought a bunch of plug ins, upgraded to 8.0... etc. And It seemed like keeping current was getting harder and harder. Pro Tools 9.0 was just out of my reach being a single income family guy.

Pro Tool 10 is twice as far and 9.0 away.. What caught my eye was the email from Avid... "Committed to the Professional"... So I think we are seeing a rebirth of the old business model prior to the release of the LE line-up. High end everything, so only people with moderately sized studios and up will be able to use the Avid products. Media Composer will probably go back up to the $3000+ range...

Planning the obsolescence of the TDM architecture and replacing it for another similar card based architecture. Do we really need another proprietary plugin type?

Avid is giving TDM guys 3 years to sell/trade... 003 owners are now staring down the 001 redux path.

Avid is heading down a path that I cannot afford to continue down. For the top end guys with tight schedules for post work, and really large projects, they have to stay on the path to remain competitive and viable in their respective industries. That path isn't a choice. They are forced into by market pressure.

I make music, whether its with my 1" 16 track analog, or 64 tracks of Pro Tools 8 and my measly 50 third party plugins.

Deep down..... I knew this day was going to come!

What if you could get PT10 and a newer interface for around $300-$400?

Think this will work?:
Buy mbox pro+PT9. You get strike, velvet, eleven LE, AND PT10 upgraaaadeeee for free!
So you're a grand in.
Sell 003R -$400
Sell the free VI's -about $250

You are left with an interface that sounds better than the 003R and with Snazy PT10, for less than the cost of upgrading from LE to 10. May just be the sweet spot to hold you over for a few years.

I like to add that a lot of TDM guys are not pleased with the price structure as well!

I personally like the new features; their pricing for the upgrades be it the high end products or the low end products seems a bit off IMHO, especially considering the state of the recording industry, and the competition.
You can "price yourself out of the market", and Avid seems to do this with PT10.

Granted, there are R&D costs etc and they need to make profit, fair enough. Unfortunately they still have to iron out some of the mistakes from the past.
Yet they possibly will displease their "prosumer" customers, anger their TDM customers... post guys I don't know any...

Their HD native system is (again IMHO) not priced correctly, as well. That is possibly the reason why they didn't sell as many as they had hoped.

Well, I don't know yet what I am going to do, still on 8.0.1

They don't do that anymore.
Any hardware that comes with PT 9 was an additional charge.
So if you purchased a mBox that came bundled with PT 9 it was a higher cost than the mBox with PT 8.
So the PT 9 mBoxes street prices are price:
Pro $999
mBox $819
Mini $629

If PT 10 is still an additional cost from PT 9 then there is no way they would give a free PT 10 upgrade for any reason.
Avid made some real dramatic software structure changes when they killed LE and it's spreading even more.

We have seen the end of the amnesty upgrades because the software is now a product in itself, it's no longer tied to the hardware.
