ATA drive in PowerMac G4 removeable bay
I've read posts in which users report adding an additional ATA drive in the Zip bay below the CD in a PowerMac G4. This would allow for three internal ATAs, which would very useful in 96k sessions with high track counts.
Can anyone tell me more about this configuration? I know that Apple doesn't certify the Zip bay for hard drives due to potential problems with heat dissipation, so I ordered a couple of the new Western Digital WD1200JB special edition drives (they run very cool, so will probably be fine). Anything else to be aware of regarding installation and/or operation? By the way, I haven't put them to use yet, but these Western Digital drives have amazing specs. Bare Feets reports performance as good or better than most 10k SCSI drives, and at $196 for 120 Gig (NewEgg), they seem like a great deal... Any additional insights will be greatly appreciated. |

Re: ATA drive in PowerMac G4 removeable bay
The real reason to NOT put it into the ZIP bay is the speed on that buss is only 15.5 megs/sec. A far cry from what that drive will do. Buy the Sonnet ATA100 card, and you can get read/write speeds of 60 megs/sec. That's the way to go.

Re: ATA drive in PowerMac G4 removeable bay
Is that true even after removing the CD drive and making the hard drive the bus master?
