Default Please recommend an alternative to ProTools LE

Hi there,

I'm using Digi 001 on my Mac and I'm about the buy a 2ch rec card for my wintel PC. Unfortunately there is no PT available for that config. Can anyone recommend another midi & audio sequencer for windows similar to PT? Any help is highly appreciated - thx a lot.

Uh, I don't know if this is the right forum for that question

What operating system will you be using? I have heard of a PTLE rip-off for linux.

btw, welcome to the board!

Oh, sorry... I must be tired
There are several sequencers, the most obvious are Sonar and Cubase...

eh....mbox is a pretty nice 2-channel recording solution with ptle wich runs on windows machines.

Ardour is the ripoff for linux.

Skale is another one, but for windows AND linux

Both are legally free (open source)

Pro Tools is available for your Wintel PC if it's running XP - perhaps tell us more about the PC system.

I'm surprised, Rail. The people at Digidesign told me, I couldn't run PT on my system:
PIV @ 3,05 GHz, 1 GB RAM, XP pro, M-Audio Audiophile 192 info about that card.

I once ran PT LE 6 on my Wintel system, but before I had to install the Digi 001 PCI card (which is not my intention now). Besides, it was a real hazzle to get that PT running on XP! No Hyperthreading allowed, etc. I saw lots of blue screens . But I still want to give it another chance.

I also read about Cubase SX 3. Would you recommend it?

While it is true that Avid own's both Digidesign and M-Audio, pro tools currently only functions on pro tools interfaces, such as the 002, 002r, and MBox. You will need different software to make use of the M-Audio interface.

It will work with any software that makes use of these drivers:
ASIO
WDM
GSIF 2
Core Audio

My first recommendation for an application that would be on-par with the functionality of Pro Tools would be Nuendo.

To run Pro Tools you need to use Digidesign hadware. The MBox, 002 and 001 all work fine under XP if you have a compatible computer (check the compatibility documents at the link below).

While you can run plenty of other apps using third party hardware.. if you already have a Mac running Pro Tools... if you plan to exchange sessions, it would probably be smarter to stick with a compatible format... so I'd run Pro Tools on the PC too.

I totally agree with you, it would be really smart to run PT on both systems. But I'm curious about the audio advantage given by recording with 192 kHz. And there is no Digidesign hardware providing 192 kHz sampling rate (at least not in the "affordable section"). As I record my stuff step by step I only need 2 input channels at a time. That makes the M-Audio device so attractive to me. I don't think there is a comparable card available from Digidesign, is it?
I'm just a perfectionist trying to get the best possible result out of my work
