Default PT 6 LE Bummer

Digi is finally implementing a feature that I've wanted for a long time, but it won't be in LE: Catalogs. From what I've read, Catalogs are like Bins in the Avid world. From the Sound on Sound review, "they are collections of pointers to volumes or files and can be used to collect together regularly used files and share them among other projects or Pro Tools systems."

It would have been great to have Catalogs for drum loops, sound effects, drum hits, etc. and share them between projects. The only thing that seems to be missing is the storage of sub-sequences.

Well, maybe we'll get it in a couple of years or one of their competitors in PC land will beat them to the punch.

Sounds like it would be simple enough to emulate with an orderly filing system for clips, sound effects, and whatnot that you use. Put them in a shared filesystem and everyone on your network will have access to them.

I can see how it would be nice if PT knew where to look for them, though. It would save some hunting around.

Take care,
Chris

From what I know digibase will be part of PT 6.x when it is released. According to people in the know it builds a database of all the sessions on your system so you can browse for audio and stuff and search and all kinda groovy stuff.

I think with the TDM version you get a seperate standalone app as well, but I guess you'll have to wait and see.

Cheers,
Marcus

Hello. Both LE and TDM get Digibase. TDM gets Digibase Pro.

This is from the Digibase Guide on the Technical Downloads page.
Quote:
DigiBase and the DigiBase Pro option (included
with TDM systems only) combine an intuitive,
browser-style interface with an integrated databasing engine, optimized for Pro Tools data
and media management.

DigiBase browsers provide extensive databasing
tools for searching, sorting, auditioning, and
importing of audio, session, OMF, and other
types of files. Multiple browsers can be displayed and arranged, with custom display settings provided to optimize your work environment.

Features

DigiBase (All Systems)

With DigiBase you can:

• View mounted volumes (disks).
• View all content on mounted volumes.
• Search across multiple volumes simultaneously.
• Copy, rename, and move files.
• Audition files.
• Drag and drop audio or entire session files
from browsers into the session.
• View, pause, or resume tasks (such as copying
files and creating fades) using the Task window.

DigiBase Pro (TDM Systems Only)

DigiBase Pro provides additional features for
TDM systems. With DigiBase Pro, you can:

• Create and share custom Catalogs that reference
files wherever they are stored.
• Search on any combination of file metadata.
• View, search, and spot files from offline volumes.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">So yes, catalogs are for TDM only.

On the bright side, the Sound on Sound review mentioned this little tidbit that I will find useful:

"You can now specify the track height that is selected when you hit the zoom toggle (E) key. By choosing 'extreme', it is possible to emulate a Cubase or Logic feel, where a MIDI region zooms to fill the screen with the piano-roll display when 'E-keyed'.

Ohhh, can't wait for Command Focus in LE.
