AAX DSP versions of new 64-bit VI:s in Pro Tools 11?
Straightforward question as many of us are gearing up to go to HDX and PT11 and in looking for bits and pieces to optimize a new setup.
Will there be any point in having AAX DSP versions of new 64-bit VI:s in Pro Tools 11? I realise we can't use DSP ram for samples, but say if you are using SSD:s and want to get the best out of a HDX DSP setup. Lower latency when playing and recording? Input and output buffer advantages for professional composers? Using DSP for VI:s in composing in order to free up system resources for other processes? Anybody with any insight? Is this pointless or worth looking at for developers to give an edge to a HDX DSP setup? A reply from tech support/devs would be fab! Thanx for listening Last edited by houser; 04-12-2013 at 01:08 AM. Reason: Moved |

The way I understand this, VI's would not be the best use for the DSP ressources.

Apart from not using ram on HDX cards, do you have any other hints? |

Re: AAX DSP versions of new 64-bit VI:s in Pro Tools 11?
Typically VI's aren't doable on DSP. As efficient as they can be for processing audio. They don't really have the ability to host VI's. VI's are big and complex compared to audio processing plugs.
However there is a new AAX format called hybrid. It uses both DSP and native power simultaneously. And it's been hinted that could be a way to access some of the DSP power in HDx. How and what benefits that will have?? I'm not sure. Read this thread. :) http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=337287

This would be the time to lobby the best VI devs to look at it if it holds promise. If avid wants to be serious about professional composers, it might also be an incentive to promote this if it holds water. |

I suspect if it offers any benefit developers will implement it.

The primary reason is the fact that the ti chips on the hdx card do not have the processing power to run most of the modern virtual instruments.

Re: AAX DSP versions of new 64-bit VI:s in Pro Tools 11?
They sure have the horsepower but what they do not have is the 64-bit RAM that CPU's are enjoying. Try to create a VI that only uses very little memory and yes you can put it on DSP. But the DSP on a HDX card cannot use RAM on the motherboard, only the dedicated memory on the card, so that is the primary reason why you don't get an AAX-DSP Ivory for example

Run one of the modern virtual instruments such as omnispere, uhe dive etc and look at the CPU usage - these plugins fall well outside the limits of a ti dsp chip. While it is probably possible to run some of the older vi's as dsp it is not being pushed as a possibility as the newer more demanding algos will not run. |

EDIT: And do you know how much of that CPU load is because the plug needs to stream something in and out of memory? That (memory) is really the biggest obstacle regarding VI's
