Default Help backing up school projects

Hello,

i am Starting School at Mediatech Institute here in houston on Monday
Everyone was Given a 300 gig External Hard drive..i Dont have a Mac and i was told if im gonna be backing my projects up at home im gonna need some software that would help with that

can anyone point me in the right direction ?
