Default Streaming bit rate etc

I understand going from 24 to 16 bit you need to dither. If you upload a 24 bit 48k do the streaming services knock that down to MP3s? if so do they automatically dither

Default Re: Streaming bit rate etc

There is no Bit Depth in mp3 or AAC. The encoding happens from the digital audio data, whatever that format is (16bit, 24bit, 32bit float). It applies its encoding algorithm based on the Bit Rate.

That means the higher the Bit Depth that you give an encoder the better, no matter if you create your mp3/AAC files yourself or upload to a streaming service that is doing the encoding for you.

Here are some excerpts from Apple's "Mastered for iTunes" delivery requirements:

An ideal master will have 24-bit 96kHz resolution. These files contain more detail from which our encoders can create more accurate encodes. However, any resolution above 16-bit 44.1kHz, including sample rates of 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, and 192kHz, will benefit from our encoding process.
Our encoders then use every bit of resolution available, preserving all the dynamic range of a 24-bit source file and eliminating the need for dithering
Don’t provide files that have been downsampled and dithered for a CD. This degrades the file’s audio quality.

And yes, Pro Tools is still not providing encoding for AAC (as was recently discussed on this forum)
