Default Re: What is this Apple Update? Hard Disk Update...ver 1.0

There are actually two flavors of the update now, one for OS 9 and one for OS X. If you ask your question at a lot of Mac support sites, the answer might be "bunging up your drive."

They are firmware updates to Apple supplied hard drives in rather a lot of Apple G4 systems. The stated goal of the update is to change something or other in the firmware to prolong disk life.

**Note that Apple warns very clearly to be sure you have a current backup of the drive before you do the update.** There are quite a few horror stories making the rounds about the update trashing drives, or bunging up an original Apple supplied hard drive that was, for example, moved from Master to Slave when a new drive was added, etc.

I've not touched the update, as my original Apple drive in my G4 died one week before the warranty blew, and the freebie replacement went into a FW box. I'd suggest you check out the threads at Macintouch.com before you decide to apply the update.
