Default Severe digital noise problem - please help

Hey guys, I'm having a problem I've never had before.

I am getting digital noise spikes in my recordings. When I'm recording in, I don't hear any noise at all. However, upon playback, every few minutes or so theres a good 1/4 second or so of digital noise (when I'm recording in stereo it shows up only on 1 side, but there is no rhyme or reason to which side.) Also, sometimes I get full on digital noise through the speakers during playback which stops when I stop playback. I tried recording 8 tracks of blank with all 8 of my analog inputs and I still got noise in the recording. Another weird thing is sometimes I get what looks like it should be digital noise in the displayed waveform (totally maxed out waveform) but I hear the recording as it should be. Digitest runs perfect. I tried replacing the Digilink cable ) Here's my setup:

G5 2.0 gHz dual processor 1.5 gb ram
Pro Tools HD3 (non Accel)
96 i/o
Pro Tools 6.9 / OS 10.3.8

please help! thanks!

Sounds like a hard drive problem. What is your hard drive setup?
