Default mp3/wav of same track different tempo?

just curious as to why and how this happens.

i tracked to a drummers mp3 drums as he refused to send the wav files as the drums were being traced in his studio.

when i received the wav files it appears the mp3 files were off tempo and the wav files are spot on tempo

Im a fool for not checking the tempo of the mp3s, however, they were tracked to a click track/guitar part i provided the drummer. then again i sent him mp3 version of this to track the drums to.
im baffled as to why a mp3 file would change tempo like that.
Anyone?

Isn't this the same issue you encountered a few days ago, and then solved?

Slightly slower would indicate to me that the mp3 was recorded at a lower sample rate than your session, given the mp3 was recorded digitally.

its all a bit weird.out of 9 songs - about 4 have slightly slower tempos than the exact same wav performance.
the mp3 files were emailed to me, i threw it into a 48khz session. bounced that down, emailed to myself transfrred from phone to tape, then tracked to those drums on the tape machine.

So ive tried a completely new session at 44.1 and reinstalled the same mp3 from the email sent initially and it still is out of sync.

However, i sent a recording engineer in nz i know this wav and the mp3 and he said they were perfectly in sync...ill be damned...
have no idea.
