I always do the following:

remove muted regions, remove unused playlists (in track playlist), then hit shift-cmd-U (to select all unused regions in the regions bin) and hit shift-cmd-B and press "remove" in the dialog (don´t press "delete" !!)

"save copy in" to save a copy from the project in the current state, then in the dialog select under "items to copy" - all audio files

close project WITHOUT saving

open the newly saved copy of the project and eventually consolidate all audiofiles

This is exactly what I do, except I rename the session, i.e. "Stripped", and save in case I want to get back to point.
