Default Monday Mornin\' coming down...ADR help!

Hey all,

I'm doing ADR for an HD project, shot in Romania with US actors...the German editor has sent me a DV of the movie, which plays fine through my DC30 plus card after import into PT. At what frame rate should I record the actors? Reference has been made to 23.9...? Or should I stay with PAL 25? I've improrted the audio from the picture, and all is well...but...I'll be sending an OMF back to them (if I can export that accurately from PT) so, I want to be sure I'm recording at the proper rate...

Ideas...?

Many thanks.

Open the DV in Quicktime, and see what frame rate the movie is, and use that rate.

The safe way would be to call the sound supervisor, or if its a low budget, the director.
Yes, its ok to call on a Sunday, Im famous for calling on weekends and late evenings.
I would rather apologize for calling at an inconvenient time, than to apologize for NOT
calling!!!!

As been mentioned before work at the rate they provided with the QT. The film was most likely shot either at 25P or 24P (not 24P pull-down that is!).

If it was shot at real 24P normally you will get a QT running 25fps with a stop-frame (1 duplicate frame every second to compensate for the difference)

There are some HD-cameras that do not allow to shoot at real 24P so they might have used one of those, so watch out for that. But first thing I´d do before starting any investigation or guessing is call the editor and ask what rate you should work in.

My guess is 25fps TC 48k.

frank.

If they shot at 23.976 then either use the QT frame rate (probably 25fps) or 23.976 / 29.97ND all at 48Khz. I would agree with the guys though... call and get confirmation as to the deliverables. If you guess wrong it will be your fault not the clients ( even though they should have stipulated a set of detailed deliverables )

cheers

Dylan,

When you say movie are you refering to film or video. If video and shot in Europe I would assume it's PAl 25 fps. If it's film It's most likely 24 fps.

When you say DV, you mean on tape or as a QT? I wouldn't just go by the QT they could have also screwed up. meaning it was done in PAL and then they exported in QT to NTSC. This is not the type of conversion you should use to work with you will have sync issues afterwards.

Yes call them and find out.

All the best,

Mitch

Many thanks, all...

Georgia, why non-drop? I'll check the rate in QT this morning...director left a mess, and the only one who may have specifics is the editor, who is working in Germany on an Avid, I believe. First actor comes in today; others more scattered...I'll let you know.

Thanks again.

Dylan

Dylan, FWIW, don't stress too much. If you're doing ADR, then as long as you have the sample rate right (and thus, pitch), the frame rate won't matter. ADR requires editing in any case, so a few milliseconds one way or the other during the session won't make any difference.
Have a great session!

best,

Joe

If your doing film it's normally ND, if your doing a Video project for broadcast its normally Drop frame. Of course, as usual, it's not a firm rule.

cheers
