I haven't looked back to see if discussion has already been had around this drive so apologies if it has.

I'm using one on a gaming computer, but not on my Pro Tools machine. Frankly, I'm not entirely sure what you'd gain. Faster session loading times?

hello guys, I need to build a new PC for pro tools 10 HD. My OS will be windows 7 64 bit.

I need to make sound design for movies so I need to be able to edit very long sessions (about 3 hours timeline).

I need to charge effects in real time (reverbs, EQ, etc. etc...), and many files from my hard drive (I make sound as foley artist). the files are all wav.

I wish to know if I can work with this configuration please. what do you think? I wish I could buy I7 but I have economic problems at the moment.

Skylake i5-6600 (not "K"), 16GB ram DDR4, SSD 250GB, HDD western digital blue 4TB.

thx

I ended up springing extra for the I7, but I saw minimum config reqs from Avid site as i5 so I assume you'll be in good shape.

Ideally sounds like you're looking for somebody with i5 to post Dverb test results?

I got to about 400 or so at 44.1, but now thinking I might work with 96.1/24 so Dverb test drops to 200 or so.

I think you'll be fine til you get into the 50+ simultaneous audio tracks with unique effects, but best to hear that from someone with I5...

For your case, I'd suggest asking someone with i5 to test applying 5 dverbs each to 50 different simultaneous source audio files which is more realistic for you than Dverb aux in test.

Can you help a brother out ?

On a budget, your best bet will be an off-lease HP Z800. A friend just bought one off eBay with dual quad core Xeon's and 12GB of RAM for around $500 Later, when you can afford it, double the RAM. Add a good SSD for a C: drive=even better. Dump the BLUE drives an replace with WD BLACK(much more robust than the cheap BLUE drives) or go all the way with SSD's for recording AND for sample libraries

Re i5, its the bottom of the scale for power. 6-8 cores with hyperthreading will rock your world

Hi Everyone,

I'm a longtime Windows ProTools user since it first was ported back in 1999 and I've built 3 computers successfully as I've upgraded PT. Currently I'm running PT HDX 11.3.2.

This thread is great but it's a bit challenging to filter through the hundreds of posts to try and figure out the latest and greatest builds that appear to work. So far I've designed a build based on the X79 chip set and Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 mother board. I've found several people here with successful X79 builds from various MB manufacturers.

From my experience the MB is key to making the whole thing work. I feel pretty confident that all the parts I've chosen will work but the MB, chip and memory are designs from 2013 and my current computer has roughly 2009 parts. Ideally I'd like to get something newer to stay ahead of the curve longer.

What are the most current motherboards you guys are using with success? It would be great to hear from some HDX or HD Native owners since I have an HDX card. Do you think PT is no longer super picky about parts and will work with any modern, robust board with an Intel CPU and NVIDIA approved graphics card? (I'm looking at the NVIDIA K2200 which is on Avid's list of approved cards).

Thanks everyone!
David

Hello everyone,

Can anyone tell me if any of the components for the build in my signature look fishy? This computer is solely used for audio recording/production. No internet, no games, and I've stripped out just about everything that's not related to Pro Tools. I've done a fair bit of research, and all of the Windows 7 optimizations I could find, including Black Viper's Services settings up to "Tweaked": http://www.blackviper.com/service-co...onfigurations/
But can't seem to get rid of this random popping and clicking on playback, and occasionally on recording. I read that this is possibly due to poor hardware choices, and could also could be due to the fact that I don't have a dedicated GPU, just the "integrated graphics" that came with the motherboard, which could be taking some resources away from Pro Tools. Any thoughts about those two things? Just want to make sure I'm tearing my hair out for the right reasons.

Hi albee1952 thanks a lot for your advices. I have some economic problem so maybe I cant buy the 6 core and I need something good also for video editing and 3D in VR. do you believe I can edit a whole movie (3hr) with effects, multitrack with the CPU i7-6700 (16gb ram + SSD)?
If I buy the quad core i7 I'm inside the 800/900 euro, if I buy the six core 5820k I'm over 1300 euro.

thx! :)

@Dan , you should be fine with quad core i7-4790 assuming you are under 50 tracks * 5 plugins each at 96K/24 bit. I don't think issues change with 3 HR file, but haven't tested that.
