Default Must have plug-ins, rack and others.

Hey there,

I got my PT rig up for my high school students with the following equipment.
MacBook Pro (16 gig of memory)
Tascam 16X08 Interface
PreSonus Faderport
Microphone Splitters
CAD 7 Drum Mic
Condensor Mic (cheaper side)
27" Monitor (for dual screen)
6 Share SM 58's

What are the MUST have plug-ins and rack effects that need to be purchased next? I have made some nice recordings, and I'm familiar with the stock plugins as I've utilized most on the recordings I've made with my students.

Thanks! Kenny

You'd probably want to get them familiar with at least Kontakt from Native Instruments, but the full Komplete is a better deal.

Although, I don't know exactly what you are trying to teach, if it's just the basics - the stock plugins are more than good enough for that.

Maybe the Soundtoys Bundle (Academic.) Seems you are keyed into drums and the Soundtoys bundle is great on them (plus lots of options in guitar work.)

You should look to who do academic versions of plugins (like Soundtoys.) They are the same as regular just at lower cost and you would qualify.

You've seemed to stocked up on a lot of dynamic mics between the SM58s and CAD 7. Finding a cheap ribbon and a pair of cheap LDC should probably be in order. Hopefully multipattern LDCs so they can try and learn about different recording techniques.

Also, why 6 SM58? Is this for live performances? I'd assume SM57 for studio work.

Kontakt definitely if they are writing music (not just recording) in Pro Tools. If it is strictly recording, then probably not.

Waves Gold bundle. There's more than enough there to keep most people happy.

Keeping things basic is wise, but I can't live without my Pultec Even if its only the Bomb Factory version. And maybe a decent reverb plugin (IK Classik Reverbs ?) And while the kids learn, maybe include at least the Essential version of Melodyne

Totally and it is only $99 right now which is rediculously low. Waves are digging a hole for themselves as lowering the prices this much will only make customers not buy anything until the next rock bottom sale...

Waves have left the building here for good. We do have a few singles but found much better sounding plugins elsewhere and not 20y old stuff either

I make decent use of the Abbey Roads plugins (have the lot). I use C6 as a low-rent multiband compressor. Got Supertap delay; it's not been used since I got Echoboy. Have the L3 compressor family but that's another one that has fallen by the wayside since I got Fabfilter Pro L2 and the Brainworx bx_limiter.

But that's it. Like you say better sounding stuff elsewheres.

Stock plugins are 95% of all it is needed, now, having third party plugins is fun, inspiring and in many cases can make your life easier.

They are students do they really need huge plugin bundles?

Unless the class was doing something specific with VIs you really need something for... e.g. drum VIs (I would start with EZ drummer). I suspect time would be better spent on the basics, and leave the distractions of plugin hoarding for them to discover in their own time. But I would get the Avid complete plug in bundle... don’t consider that one hoarding. more baseline of what should be included in Pro Tools.

Throwing lots of plugins at teaching systems that tend to get abused/messed up anyhow is maybe not good for stability... make sure you have carbon copy clover bootable clones to recover from. It might also create hassles for students who may want to move stuff to other systems/own systems in future.

One year sub to the complete Pro Tools Plugins bundle is both inexpensive and extensive. For rack "effects" i wouldn't consider any as "must have" with the less costly mics you have. IMHO i would agree with Bscout's suggestion to expand mic choices a bit.
