Thumbs down MPEG-4 (perian) movie causes crash upon closing the session

Digi:

I just did a fresh install of Protools to try and fix this one, because it seemed so strange:

I have an empty session, except for a quicktime movie (and a pair of audio tracks) with the following video specs:

Format: IMA 4:1, Stereo, 48.000 kHz
MPEG-4 (Perian), 320 x 240, Millions
Frame Rate: 29.97

The session plays no problem, but as soon as I close the session, I get an "unexpected error" and Pro Tools closes.

No other programs are running. Nothing else in the session that could be causing the crash. I made sure it's the video format causing the problem. Using quicktime pro, I took a small snippet of the movie and converted it into H.264, and replaced the crashing video with that one. Problem went away.

Now, I've had corrupted videos before, but why is this crashing Pro Tools so perfectly, every time?

Thanks for looking into this
A

I just checked this out and your video file is corrupted, which is the cause of the crash.

Two of my partners on different versions of protools could run the video, without crashing protools.
Wouldn't an error message be more appropriate?

Ah, well, yes it would, however coding in error handling to account for every kind of corruption would be...tedious. And probably ineffective a lot of the time - in this case, almost certainly, as Quicktime does the video handling and it would have to be the one that handles the error. Right now it looks like QT chokes/crashes (the QT engine, that is) and takes PT with it.
