Default Samsung 970 EVO...

Bought a Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe with a PCIe 3.0x16 adapter. Popped it in an HP Z420 (3.5 GHz hex-core) with Win10. Added Samsung's NVMe driver.

Read speed 3,443 MB/s, Write speed 2,470 MB/s.

The 7200 RPM 3TB spinner boot drive (temporary, will be replaced with an SSD in a PCIe slot) is 207 MB/s read and 194 MB/s write.

Too bad the 970 will not configure as a boot drive, the Z420 is long in the tooth...

Why won't the 970 configure as a boot drive? I have a 525GB Crucial MX300 M.2 SSD as my boot drive for my operating system (also have a second one for recording, and a 1TB Samsung 860 EVO for extra storage on my laptop).

You should be able to use the Samsung as you boot drive. Maybe you need to move it to a different slot.

If the BIOS does not support booting off a NVMe drive then it cannot be done... remember other drives are AHCI... entire different software interface to the drive. That is the usual NVMe boot issue with older computers.

And the Crucial M.2 MX300 is nothing like this drive. It is an old relatively slow SATA, not PCIe, interface drive. M.2 can support SATA and multiple configurations of PCIe, which can then run AHCI or more efficient NVNe over that PCIe link. Any computer should be able to boot a SATA drive, but not relevant to the OP here. Samsung 860 Evo is also a slow SATA drive.

Not sure which adapter card you purchased and if it’s a x16 lane card (rare) or if it’s only a x16 physical slot size card. A single PCIe M.2 only uses at most 4 x PCIe 3 lanes.

Anyhow here is a drool worthy quad M.2 adapter card: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13511...-ssd-raid-card

I would only use as JBOD. Curious if that fan is big enough if the drives are super busy (and busier than likely needed for Pro Tools).

And those sequential read and write numbers are impressive but it's latency under high load that's really important, and oh high-end/modern NVMe drives are so good there as well... (and NVMe really helps with that).

Correctomundo.

Not sure why the card is a 16x physcial, 4x transfer is what shows up in system info programs. It came with a heatsink and snaps onto the slot, does not have a metal connector on the back. It is on Newegg, an RIITOP PCIe M.2 NFF NVMe AHCI SSD to PCIe 16x adapter for $19.95 until 10/30. The 970 EVO was 512 GB for less that $150.

Read a bunch of web posts by folks wanting to boot from an NVMe M.2 in their Z420 (or Z620 or Z820). Did change the F10 setup from AHCI+RAID to just AHCI. Also flipped a few items from legacy to EFI. But the 970 drive does not show up in the "Storage" items in BIOS.

I have a word processor/spreadsheet/email computer that runs Win7, so I bought the refurnished Z420 because it had Win10 and better specs for under $500. I paid $200 for the Win 10 I installed on my MacBook Pro. My understanding is Win7 is headed for the boneyard. I actually like Win7 better. Win10 has so much security I am still putzing with it just to connect to network stuff. There are some negative reviews on the latest Win10 "update" -- mine is set to hold off on the updates for six months.

There are a few web posts which say you can add some code to the Z420 BIOS, but that is not in the cards for me. It would be more economically feasible to just pop for a new motherboard.

I ran a Sandra on the Z420. It appears the MOBO supports SATA 3, so I will start by just adding an 850/860 PRO to a standard SATA bay.

The Motherboard needs to support UEFI Bios (which most if not all latest MB's do ) to be able to boot off the PCIE SSD.

UEFI is a big part of it, but it’s not just that simple, with minimal UEFI requirements etc. So need to consult motherboard and drive vendor tech info.

Just set up my 2010 Mac Pro to boot off a Samsung 1 TB 970 Pro NVMe card. Used an inexpensive PCIe 4 lane adapter card with a heat sink plugged into the MP's 4 land slot. Adapter and heat sink was only $25.

NVMe booting in a cMP works with Mojave 14.6 (maybe Mojave 14.4, too). Updated the graphics card so I could load Mojave: added an 8GB Radeon Sapphire Pulse RX580 with the Macvidcards boot ROM flash.

The PCIe version 2 limits the performance to +/- 1,400, half of what the newer PCIe3 slots can do. But still about three times faster than a SATA SSD in a PCIe accelerator card and six times faster than an SSD in one of the four 3Gbps HDD bays.

Nice right

I've been cloning TB3 external NVMe Mac drives today. Amazing how fast they clone and boot.

Cool deal. What exact adapter card with it buy?

Do you feel that your Protools sessions run better with the new 970 Pro?
