Default External USB-C shoot-out

Tests run using Blackmagic Design “Disk Speed Test” on a late 2016 MBP TB3 2.7GHz with 512GB internal SSD. Operating system was Sierra 12.6.

Mac internal 512GB:
Write 2,034 MB/sec; Read 2,348 (up to 2,617) MB/sec

Sonnet “Fusion” TB3 PCIe external. Loaded with Toshiba 1TB SSD: $899
Connects by Thunderbolt 3. Bus powered, includes TB3 cable.

Higher performance formatted with DOS ExFAT/MBR:
Write 1,465 MB/sec; Read 2,255 MB/sec
When formatted with Mac OS extended/GUID:
Write 1,070 MB/sec; Read 2,248 MB/sec

OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual Mini: $90 unloaded. (Each Crucial 512 GB drive was $110). As tested, $310.

1) Holds a pair of 2.5” SATA III (6 GB/sec) SSD drives. Supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gb/sec).
2) Connects at highest speed with USC-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2). Quirky results with a CalDigit “C-Dock” as of this writing. Includes two cables: USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A. Write performance diminishes with USB-C Gen 1 connection. Includes external PS, but may be powered by by some USB-C connections.
3) Supports RAID-0, RAID-1, single drive (JBOD) and spanned drives.
4) Tested with single and dual Crucial MX500 2.5” 512GB SSD. RAID-0 gives 1TB capacity.
5) Did not notice significant difference dependent on format

OWC Mercury Elite USC-C into MBP TB3 port (operating at USB-C Gen 2):

Single drive only:
Write 433 MB/sec; Read 526 MB/sec

RAID-0:
Write 813 MB/sec; Read 882 MB/sec

OWC Mercury Elite USC-C into CalDigit “TS3 Lite” dock, daisy chained TB3 port, (operating at USB-C Gen 2):

RAID-0: Write 794 MB/sec; Read 861 MB/sec

OWC Mercury Elite USC-C into CalDigit “TS3 Lite” dock into front panel USC-C Gen 1 port (operating at USB-C Gen 1):

RAID-0: Write 333 MB/sec; Read 352 MB/sec

OWC Mercury Elite USC-C into CalDigit “C-Dock” dock into USC-C Gen 1 port:

RAID-0: Write 414 MB/sec and Read 426 MB/sec.

NOTE: Quirky results with C-Dock: during initial testing the read and write speeds between the OWC Dual Mini and the CalDigit “C-Dock” were less than 40MB/sec during initial testing (lots of cable changing going on). However, during re-test the next day results were as shown above.

The OWC is USB-C Gen 2 and the CalDigit C-Dock is USB-C Gen 1. For comparison, a Verbatim 32 GB USB-C / USB-A dual thumb drive has performance of:

Verbatim USB-C flash drive:
1) On the CalDigit “TS3 Lite” dock (on USB-C Gen 1 port): write speeds of 13 MB/sec and Read speeds of 158 MB/sec.

On the CalDigit “C-Dock” (on USB-C Gen 1 port): write speeds of 13 MB/sec and Read speeds of 175 MB/sec.

G-Drive “Slim” external 512 GB USB-C Gen 2 SSD (formatted as ExFAT)

Into MBP TB3 port:

Write 425 MB/sec; Read 526 MB/sec

Into CalDigit TS3 Lite dock on TB3 port (daisy-chained)

Write 419 MB/sec; Read 516 MB/sec

Into CalDigit TS3 Lite dock on front panel USB-C Gen 1 port

Write 326 MB/sec; Read 352 MB/sec

Into CalDigit USB-C Gen 1 port

Write: 387 MB/sec; Read 427 MB/sec
